Default Need advice: Removing rear bumper skin

Posted this one in the main Impreza forum before I found this Baja forum, so I'll repeat:

I got a ding in the parking lot the other night. It dented in the corner of my rear bumper skin. I don't believe that it actually dented the bumper, just the skin. Looks & feels like it can be popped back out again if I can remove the skin.

I searched the forums and found lots of info about removing Impreza bumpers, but I think I just need to remove the skin. Is it just a bunch of push clips, or is there a lot more to it than that?

Any advice is really appreciated, since auto body shops are talking $500!!!!

Jim

I think you're right. Just a bunch of push pins. Usually rear bumber covers are alot easier than fronts. I've never had mine off, but I've had Ford, Saturn, Chevy, Nissan rear covers off. Theres never really any rocket science to it, just dig in. I've found that most manufacturers use the plastic rivit type push pin. It has a center that needs to be pulled up before the whole pin comes out. Also the occasional pair of body screws, nothing too serious.

I use an upulstery tool on the push pins, but a screw driver and needle nose plyers work too. Parts stores usually have suitable replacement pins if you destroy one or two.

Almost everything on my WRX was push pins. I broke a few taking them out but its not really all that big of a deal... missing one or two wont hurt you. Its really easy to take the bumpers or anything else off really, just keep the screws together because some are different sizes and dont step on them teehee!

start by removing your rear tails.... and then start searching for the clips... mainly it's all push clips... maybe 1-2 bolts... (10mm?) but that's about it.

take your time... there are tons of them.

good luck
