Post OT Rant: New 2001 Civic

Getting into a heated discussion about the new Impreza inspired me to start this thread. As a current Civic Si owner, let me ask this question:

What in the hell was Honda thinking when they made the new Civic? Gone is everything that made the Civic the tuners choice. I'm really disappointed in it.

Hey, if Honda wants to kill it's market share with people like us, that's fine. I'm loyal to a good product, not a brand. If the new Impreza is the second coming after all (like many people here think) I'll be first in line to try it out. Either that....or I'll go German.

Anyway, had to get that off my chest.

Honda is making a car to appeal to Everyman, not the performance enthusiast. I have no doubt that they'll sell more of these cars than the last one because of their price and packaging. Having less of a performance image will also help to drive down its insurance rates as well. It's like how Toyota sells tons of Corollas but enthusiasts don't even consider that platform... the Civic will soon be rendered a similar fate.

By the way, if this is OT, why isn't it in the OT forum?

I think its that Honda wanted to get rid of the ricer's and keep the single women. Think of all the $$ that ricers cost Honda cause they nuke trannies every week, blow rings left and right, and in general trash them. They also atracct theves, who in turn drive up the cost of insurance on a civic to MORE than a $5K more 2.5RS or VW GTI. Thats right the Poor bastard driving a Civic LX pays as much as you do.

Don;t see much wrong with honda's reasoning.

i agree that the new civic is not quite the car that it used to be. but, the real question is: why is there a serious lack of performance parts for the prelude? as an owner of both an impreza and a prelude, it sadens me that i can easily (though parts are not always a phone call away) modify my subaru, but my "sports car" isn't so easily modified. i know it is a bit pricier than the civic, but come on... it is honda's premier sports car (if you don't count the S2000). sorry mates, i guess i'm just bitching...

Some good thoughts...especially about the Prelude.

Actually, I heard a rumor (just a rumor), that VW was putting its 4-motion AWD system into it's 2002 models. And the 1.8t cars were getting bumped to 170HP like the new A4. Can we say AWD 170HP Golf? Basically, that would be an American S3.

I'm sure we can all agree that would be super-sweet.

Unfortunately, the 4Motion 1.8T Golf has a 0-60 time of over 8 seconds, doesn't it?

By the way the new Civic owners' name is Jennifer. That's according to Honda's research. Do YOU know anyone who drives a performance car named Jennifer?

Question

Alphadog,
I'm a bit confused. You slate Honda because of the lack of tunability of the new Civic. You slate the new Impreza because of its looks/price compared to an Audi/VW etc.

What exactly are the qualities you look for in a car?

Image? I think not. The Civic or the Subaru certainly do not give the prestige image that you seem to crave.

Ability? Nope, not that either. The Impreza and certain Hondas certainly outclass the Germans in that arena.

You seem to be full of contradiction when it comes to cars, you are neither a true enthusiast, nor an image seeker without substance.

I fear they don't actually make a car yet that is suitable for you. An obvious oppurtunity for an entreprneur?

Geezer

P.S. They did make a car that suited your needs, but they don't make them anymore. The Audi Coupe Quattro Turbo. If only you had been born twenty years earlier..........

If you read this months C&D review of the new Civic, the de-tuning was pretty much intentional- "Jennifer" was the code name of their everyperson target market rep & they spent a phenomemnal amount of effort on market research to maximize the sellability of the car. So yes, they definitely have made a conscious decision to trade the tuner market (probably much smaller, and often buy used civics) for the more profitable "Jennifer" market. Who can blame them? Honda is the last and smallest independent Japanese car maker- some have said their days are limited b/c of their fierce independence (except now they're building ULEV engines for GM). If viability and market share will keep them on the map, let em do it. There's always the Prelude / Integra route. Its not like Honda CAN'T make perf. cars (I'm thinking NSX here), they just prefer selling more cars.

Geezer, its simple.

I want a car that comes from the factory ready to go and with nice styling, able to be tuned but not necessary, valuable but not on one extreme or the other - econo or luxo.

I drive a Civic Si because that's what I could afford. Hopefully in a year, I'll be in a bigger, more profitable boat. But until then...

I'll keep looking for a car with style and substance. It is the combination of the two that's so damn hard to find.

There is a performance market for the Prelude. You can get a jackson racing supercharger for it and push its HP output to above the NSX with about 6lbs of boost. You can even get genuine Mugen parts from King Motorsports. Sure they're expensive, but they are the best.

Eby - altho there may be an "aftermarket" for the prelude, it seriously sucks. nothing short of a turbo produces serious gains, and the JRSC is (contrary to popular belief) NOT available for the lude... yeah i know, talk about the website price listings all you want, but its simply not available and may not be for a long time

and about mugen parts, man, they do produce the best gains, but hondas have great stock parts, the gains are simply not worth the price you pay for n/a mods, even mugen

Part of the reason is because Honda motors are already so highly tuned to get so much hp out of a tiny motor, so any mods you can think of probably were done already before the car got to the dealership. The other reason is slow sales of that model...
