so I had it on intelligence mode today and i drove by a sheriffs dep. he was pointing the gun away from me but i thought that the V1 picked up everything, even instant on radar guns/lasers like he was probably using.
i know in our town we use laser and radar and whichever he was using, it did not get picked up. thankfully i wasnt going fast but i was kind of hoping to be able to get past ticket traps left and right with this thing.....

A radar detector is no magic bullet. You still have to use common sense and be vigilant.
Not even the best detector in the world can pick up an instant-on gun until it is turned on. Chances are one of two things happened- either it was an instant-on radar gun and he wasn't pulling the trigger when you went by, or it was a laser gun which you won't pick up unless it is pointed in your direction, and turned on (laser is instant-on as well). |

well dang, then if these radar and laser guns are so sophisticated and made to be hard to detect, it almost defeats the purpose of getting a detector. im becoming skeptical as to why i paid $400 now!
![]() i know his gun's trajectory didnt encompass my area but i thought that the detector could pick up beams within a radius of the source(not just head on) he was parked at the stump of where the crosswalk meets the sidewalk. he used this big metal box to hide behind. i dont know what it does maybe its some sort of generator for the intersections lights etc.... he was completely exposed from the area of the intersection i was at but if you were trying to find him from where the radar gun was pointing he was nudged up snuggly and his green uniform blended in pretty well with the bushes and greenbelt beside him....very crafty sheriffs we have! i asked one i saw in person what intersection he and his cronies hide so id know where to watch myself and he responded back with a dumb responses: "everywhere." then he said "we have 9 motors in the city" what am i supposed to say? we are very gracious? ![]() Last edited by JF1GD2; 03-29-2004 at 05:59 PM. |

Did you actually think he would tell you what places to avoid, realizing that you wanted to know so you could speed more often? And you thought it could tell you about instant-on devices? Research a little better before you buy! On the other hand, I have a beautiful tract of swamp land you might be interested in purchasing...

Intelligence Mode?? I thought you were using a radar detector.
Intelligence Mode is when you junk the radar detector and drive at a reasonable speed! Save a life, maybe your own. ![]() |

its a setting that the Valentine 1 has
it filters out less serious signals like grocery store infrared operated glass sliding doors. funny thing is, i was waiting at the stop 15 feet from where the sheriff was perched and i toggled through all the modes to see if thered be a difference. considering i was in the advanced logic mode i thought that itd be c*** blocking me from picking up his radar perhaps. well it looks like even the more sensitive all bogeys mode and regular logic mode didnt pick his gun up. and mind you i was still sitting in neutral 15 feet from him...no warnings coming out of the damn thing. not even one little red dot from the threat level gauge. ![]() i hope this is just a situational error bc otherwise i am in deep if i ever cross by another one of these guys getting no warnings...... ![]() |

Screw reasonable speed.
I heard that if you take enough shots of Jaeger beforehand you can get a WRX up to six million miles per hour, although I think it only works on a bridge or near a daycare center. Rain helps too. |

It reminds me of the time a police car drove by and my wife asked why my radar detector din't go off. Simple answer. There was no radar. Mulder is correct either it was not turned on or it was a lasar gun.

Here's the thing. The V1 detects waves heading towards you. If the officer was aiming the gun away from you (and your detector) the only way it's going to "see" the K/Ka/X/Laser waves is if there's something reflecting them back to the detectors "eye" (like a truck/car, etc). I've had my V1 go nuts, then silent, then nuts, etc. Well, I didn't PASS a speed trap, didn't see a cop heading towards me using Instant-On....surely my detector's broken??? Then I saw the cop heading the same direction as me, but 3 cars up....using Instant-On. That's why it was on and off, and that's why I never saw him....the alert was coming from reflecting waves and not "incoming". From what I remember the pamphlet Valentine included w/my detector went into this at length.

So those of you who have a V1, would you make a different decision if you had to do it over again?

I'd get the V1 all over again. I have a Passport hardwired into my VW Passat and would opt for a V1 in the STi without a moment's hesitation. I like it THAT much.

If it was radar, it was off. Either that or it was a laser gun. Even if the gun is not pointed directly at you the valentine would still pick it up.
