Thanks for posting this page. I recomend picking up this issue to anyone.

My favorite part is where they sum it up as "One bad car, one very good one and one potentially brilliant one."

Sure we don't drive the car they are talking about, indeed only a few of us drive a car that was manufactured to wear the WRX badge. But still it makes you warm and fuzzy to think that your car is a first cousin to new car whose "ability to take your breath away is still very much intact."

16.9 in a 1/4 mile? at 95? My RS did 15.5 @ 93 with just an intake and exhaust on. What gives?

Cool

Alex,

Read the intitial post again. I thought the same thing, too!
That number is for the 0-100mph run. The one below is for the 1/4 mile, which is 14.5.

Cheers,
Marco

Unhappy

One of the reasons us UK guys are unhappy is the stock "old" turbo did the 1/4 on 13.9.

Progress huh ?

Thanks Stook! This is good news that the auto journalists are praising the new WRX. With competition like the S3 in Europe, one only wonders what they can compare it to in the US. . . Seriously, what other US vehicles will be in its price/performance class?

Talking

As it would be way too long to list all of the perfections of the new WRX, I think I'll just mention the only things I could find wrong with it:

Exterior styling
Fuel economy

That said, I want one real bad!

How about those Grand Prix GTPs? Or Audi A4 2.8s?
Maybe the new Integras...

Off the top of my head (usually dangerous), and not including yet to be released cars -- trying to see what could be in a comparison test with the WRX for Price AND Performance:

1. Grand Prix GTP's are there, but they only come with an AT.
2. A4's are in the price range with the 1.8T, but are not in the performance class. A4 2.8L V6's are not in either class. S4's are out of the price class.
3. Mustang's are there. But I don't see these as a competitor - an entirely different philosophy to speed.
4. Firebird's/Camaro's are there. See above.
5. VW VR6's are not in the performance class.
6. S2000's are there, but a little more spendy. ( Stook)
7. Integra Type R's are definitely there.
8. Eclipse's are not in the performance class.
9. Vette's are not in the price class.
10. Celica's and MR2's are there ( Eugene).
11. Miata's are there, albeit a little slow.
12. Is the 2.5 RS there? I'd say it's not in the performance class.
13. BMW 325 is there, but more spendy.

What did I forget?

330Ci or something. 225hp RWD. But cost much more... still. I'm sure a few 330 drivers would rev at the wrx tho it would be smoked easily by the wrx. Not sure in highway speeds tho.

Yeah, they just reviewed a 330 sedan in Car and Driver. 0-60 in 6.1 seconds -- Holy crap that thing is fast. Too bad its MSRP was over $40,000. I don't like this whole up-market trend for BMW. Not only can I not afford a new M3, but it keeps the used M3's resale value inflated as well. I see too many '95 M3's selling for 25 to 30k. Now that is residual value!

Asking and getting are two diffent things... once the new M3 comes out in force, there will be a flood of 95-99s on the market.

The new M3 is so quick, so quiet... everything under 100mph is boring. Give me the point and squirt WRX with only 220hp. I'll have fun while keeping my license soooo much longer.

I agree with turtle. Will you use all of the ponies on a daily basis in the new M3? Most likely not. Prolly 50% of it. While you can harness all of the 220hp WRX ponies which is more worthwhile.

BMW is only producing a few thousand of the new M3's this year. I think it is going to be a lot more rare of a sight than the E36's. As a comparison, how many of the 91-93 M5's do you see?

But I agree 100% with MarbleTurtle and Gambit. I don't plan on tracking the car, I just want to have fun with my daily driver. And Miata doesn't come with 4 doors and a hardtop.

Peace.
