Post 2000 RS is getting slower

Weather's getting much warmer now. Temps were in the 20's when I got my car and now it's in the 80's and 90 degrees today. Bet you didn't think it got that warm in Minnesota in May, did you

I time my own 0-60 runs regularly with a stopwatch. I must be the worst Subaru driver ever because I cannot get anything like the times they show in the magazines. Magazines that I've seen show the 2000 RS 0-60 at 7.7 to 8.4s. The best time I've ever gotten when timing myself was 9.2s. Yes, it's a 5-speed. And I've tried all types of launches, from slipping the clutch to dumping it at 3000, 3500, all the way to 5500 rpm. Can't break 9 seconds. Lately though, as it's gotten warmer outside, now I can't break 10 s. Today it was 90 degrees and I timed myself 3 times. Got 11.0, 10.7, and 10.6. I got better times with my 145 hp automatic transmission 4300-lb Explorer. Hmmm. At least it still beats my old 65 hp CRX. Slowest car I've ever driven. Best 0-60 I ever got with that car was 14.1s. The times I'm getting on my RS now though are about the same as I got with my '86 Mustang V6 automatic. I got everything from 9.9 to 11.2 with that car. I'm not sure of the hp of that car. I think it was around 135 (?? 3.8 V6). But that car would easily beat the RS on most things, especially over 70 mph. Even with the auto, that thing would drop to 3rd and just take off, throwing you into your seat. With the RS at 70 mph, I drop it to 4th and all I get is a lot of noise. There's such little torque at that speed you can't tell that it's even acclerating....

Sorry, venting again. Was expecting a 165 hp 5-speed Subaru to perform better than a 135 hp auto Ford with 300 lbs more weight. It really has suprised me how slow the RS is. Our Caprice (200 hp V8) out-acclerates the RS at everything over 30mph. The Explorer out-acclerated the RS at 30-70 mph. The Mustang beat it at everything over 50 mph. In fact, besides the CRX and the '81 Corolla, this is the slowest car I've ever owned (talking about acceleration). Here come the flames eh? And the "you just don't know how to drive" insults. Whatever. Just venting. Overpaid for the car and I need somewhere to release my anger before I shove the thing off a cliff somewhere and try to collect the insurance and get arrested for fraud...

I havent any problems w/my MY00. Ive had it since December, and it's definitely faster w/the minor mods I have. In fact, I went to the track a couple weeks ago and pulled a 15.7 w/a crappy lauch. And that was the only run I had, so I didnt get any practice runs. I dont know what my 0-60 time was, but there's no way it was in the 9's with a 15.7 1/4 mile time, probably in the 7's. Maybe you got a lemon? Maybe you cant drive? I dont know, you said it.

Maybe you did get a lemon, I used to have a MY90 Acura Legend coupe & my friend's MY90 Acura Legend sedan could pull away from me even when his car was fully loaded with passengers & my car had just 140 lb me. Both cars were stock, automatic, & had 40000 mi on them at the time.

What mods have you done? If you've done any kind of intake mod, you could be drawing warm air from the engine compartment, causing undue power loss. Are you carrying a lot of extra weight (in your car, that is)? If all else fails you might try to reset the ECU. Just a couple of thoughts...

Also in minnesota myself. With a 2000 RS automatic, I dont time my 0-60 times but with just rough guesses I am positive they are still (well) below 10.

The air conditioner may slow down the car, so maybe try turning it off during the times. ?

bryanw - Dude, concentrate on driving and not timing yourself with the watch. Honestly, I have felt mine get slower as the weather warmed up and it IS rather frustrating, but still a fact of science. *shrug*

Thumbs down

Hey Bryanw,
I would not be surprised if you got a lemon! I have a 99 RS automatic and I had to change the transmission for a new one after5 months and 15k Kilometers! Now I have 35k Kilometers and it is doing the same noise and I think I need another transmission! The car has no performance, even for an automatic! The engine feels like it's going to die on me and when it shifts it sounds like crap!
Sorry for ranting about my problems, but if I were you, take it to the dealer and let them run test on it. My dealer said that maybe I will be one of the lucky ones and MAYBE get a new RS, but that is if the car really has substantial problems! I have sent a letter to Subaru Canada to complain and hopefully get some news next week or so!
I usually go on test drives with the technicians to make sure they get to see the prolem I experience, since they always come back saying they don't hear anything!
Good Luck!
Jan
P.S. If I do get to get a new RS, I will definitely go for MANUAL Transmission!

There is definitely something wrong somewhere. I have a 99 5-speed and I don't have trouble at all at any speeds. My car zips right up to 90 when I'm on it, and has no trouble beating similarly set up cars on the street.

"With the RS at 70 mph, I drop it to 4th and all I get is a lot of noise. There's such little torque at that speed you can't tell that it's even acclerating...."
This quote is troubling. When I drop it into fourth at 70 yes it makes a lot of noise, but it also speeds up. The aerodynamics of the RS aren't top notch, so yes it is going to be slower than other cars at such speeds. But it will go faster.

Who knows, you should try and find someone elses car to drive or let another RS owner drive yours. Its not often an RS owner wants to "shove the thing off a cliff somewhere"

Yes, I agree. Something is definitely wrong. No car should be losing performance this fast. It's very frustrating. I got to drive a '99 Forester automatic the other day and frankly I was stunned. I could easily tell that it was out-accelerating my RS, seems to be better all the way up to 100 mph. Even 1st gear. That doesn't make any sense at all. The biggest power loss seems to be under 3000 rpm. I used to shift gears in normal driving at around 2500-2800. That's not even possible now. It just bogs down and you don't have any torque at all, especially 3rd gear. 3rd will barely even accelerate until it gets above 3500. And then when I shift the 4th, it honestly feels like there's more available torque in 4th. I know that sounds crazy, but it really does feel like that.

Another test on how the performance is changed is the gear I use for passing on a normal 55. I used to pass with no problem by leaving it in 5th. But now if I try to pass in 5th, the acceleration is so slow, it scares me to even attempt it and stay in the other lane that long.

I guess I could try resetting the ecu again. I hate doing that though because it always sets off the alarm and the neighbors don't like that very much

Have a Nice Day?

I've heard of hesitation problems but that stinks.. My car hits 0-60 quicker than 10secs, and it's a 1.8L!!
Sure I do have an intake, but still! I'd consult the dealer or take it to the shop.. Doesn't sound right.

I've got a MY00 too, and I haven't had any of those problems. Example: merging onto the interstate, from 45-~85 in 4th gear, it had power all the way through, and the only mod I have is tinted windows. Oh, and I also have a trunk monkey. Think that makes the difference???

And if you wanted to know, I have about 5700 miles.

Take the car back to the dealer and have them look at it. Something is NOT right with the car.

I have not timed my 0 - 60, but I raced a new infinity the other day and kept dead even with it all the way from 0 - 90. I don't know which model Infinity it was, but the slower ones do 0 - 60 in 8.4 sec, and the faster ones do 0 - 60 in 7.7 seconds.

Bryan,
Pull your plugs! I wouldn't be surprised if they were black with carbon. The way your performance degraded, it sounds like maybe you were running rich (WHy???). The plugs will tell you if that is the case. You could just clean them or replace and reset the ECU and see if this helps.
If the plugs look good, I would guess that the computer is f-ing things up. Maybe it is senseing a knock and cutting the timing drastically.

Maybe you're getting gas from a place that consistenly has really bad gas? If you've tried different places, I suggest putting the car back to stock, resetting the ECU and driving it a little, then bringing it into the dealer and seeing what they say. You're right, though, preformance really shouldn't degrade that much that qiuck.

Bryan,
I think we have been spoiled w/ the cold weather. I have noticed a definate change in my acceleration now that we are going through this "heat," but not on the scale you are talking about. As for "I guess I could try resetting the ecu again. I hate doing that though because it always sets off the alarm and the neighbors don't like that very much," what is that? You actually have neighbors down in BFE? Anyway, if you come up here in the Cities maybe we could run head-to-head to determine the severity.

If you're car's slow in 90 degree weather, make sure you don't have the air conditioner on. That'll be a big power loss; I noticed it this weekend when I was driving around Wisconson.
