Other people with 04's have complained about AM reception loss but the questions I have are:

- Were these people listening to AM before tinting or is this just a sudden concern?

- How can the radio signals be blocked by a thin film of plastic but not by a thick layer of glass?

- Why listen to AM? I figure a person gets better language skills listening to the crack head DJs on FM stations trying to carry on a broadcast without giving away the hangover they are nursing.

- Have these people considered XM? Most people complaining are owners of 04 WRX/STi and these people should be the sort to be able to afford a better solution.

- Have these people changed to aftermarket head-units without re-connectiong the amplifier for the antenna signal? It's a blue wire and in diagrams it's refered to as the power antenna lead.

That's about all I can think of.. sorry I don't know more.

due to the difference in frequency and vector/direction of transmittion for AM radio and FM radio, AM radio will be blocked by a layer of film. You can also ask why you won't burn yourself in front of the microwave machine when theres only a thin door.
So, yeah, there is a chance that tinting film can block the reception of AM radio.

yea i talked to avrix and he told me that my tint has some metallic compound in it.

Don Dockers service department said that their tinting shop have been through this problem and it's caused by the metallic compound in the tint.

i don't want to remove my tint so i need another solution.

Yeah I have tint, but no problem for me. I listen to the team 1040 all the time. I need the local sports radio talk =).

I got mine done at Avrix also with no problems...

I used Madico Onyx @ 35%

Is your whole AM band totally gone?

Does the connector for the antenna have good contact in the back?

Yeah, that's about right.

Just relocate your AM antenna to the top of the windshield instead. There are window antenna kits out there to do exactly that, and you'll have a shorter wire run to the headunit to boot.

Oh, and also the tints that don't have any metal vapor deposited on them are the cheap kinds that turn purple and peel off after a while.

It's already *at* the top of the windshield...it's the upper three or four courses of gridlines.

I just got standard charcoal-grey, "non-metallic" (no silvery look at all) put on last month. I listen to AM often, and it was immediately obvious as I drove home from the tint shop, that my AM reception was HOSED!

I'm thinking about trimming the film off the antenna gridlines with an Xacto...should look ok (better than pulling top 3" of tint off, as I've seen suggested elsewhere). I'll post if I get around to it this weekend..
