Try using the "SEARCH" function and typing "radar detectors", as I know this topic has been beaten to death. Having said that, I think you're going to have a tough time finding anything in the $100-150 range that's reliable (IMO). I have a Valentine 1 in my STi and a Passport 8500 in my Passat.....having run both for a long time I'd pick the V1 over the Passport each and every time....as I feel it's abilities just outshine the Passport that much.

So I'd recommend keeping the speeds down for a few more months till you can comfortably shell out the $400 for the Valentine. My .02.

I very much dislike other people that buy cheap radar detectors, as they usually leak, and cause mine to go off.
I was getting a full 5 bar's on my 8500 from some clown in a 3000gt once, i just wanted to rip the thing off of his window, and beat him in the head with it.. ipod style.

I'd recommend something from Bell for that price range. Take a look at www.amazon.com , they have a number of reviews and decent prices.

Then educate your self Here is a great site www.speedlzones.com

They recommend several detectors which are more than adequate. That being said I have a Bel 985

Edit: added correct link

p.s. I was also on my way to work and didnt have, or want to take the time to search or 'educate' myself. I would much rather ask considering im sure there are many people out there with answers.

Unecessary. This topic HAS been beaten to death. Especially in the last 4 months. There's at least 13 pages of good info on this forum alone. More on the regional forums.

1. The time you spent in front of the computer typing this question could have been spent doing a consumer search.
2. Since you had a specific price range in mind, you could have easily found the highest rated model in your category.
3. Once you find the detector you are interested in, get back to us and ask for reviews/experience with the unit.

This simple 3 step model applies to all vehicle mods. Tell your friends.
Effectively, your post amounted to: "I have some money, what should I buy?"
We are here to provide assistance in YOUR decision-making, not to make your decision for you.

My .0002. If you are always "second fastest" on the road (meaning you only drive over if there is another car in front and behind you also going over) then you can probably use a $100 radar dectector that wil pick up the signal as the officer scans the car infront / behind. If you are "first fastest" or drive on open roads with little traffic, then you need a 8500 or V1. They will give you the most time to slow down once you learn to use them. Nothing will give you enough time to slow down if the officer uses laser or "instant on" and you are all alone on the road. Cheaper detectors do not seem to have a good ability to hide their signal, the officer can detect them which encourages the officer to choose you to write up given a choice of speeding drivers or a slow night. Jammers do not seem to work and if the cops detect one, they may use that as an excuse to take your car apart with a small screwdriver to see what other interesting things you may possess.

Passive radar jammers like the "Phantom" have been shown to be useless junk that do not work. Active jammers that actually transmit a radar signal are very illegal, not to mention expensive.
Some of the laser jammers have been found to be effective, but you can usually spot the laser traps up ahead because they can't hide like with radar.

If i was scraped for money and did not want to pay the 400 for the valentine one i would want to save a little more from where your starting and go for the Passport. I swear by the valentine 1 but the passport looks like a good alternative.

save and get a v1 or buy it off ebay. its a waste of money to get a lesser unit. or be really cheap and drive next to someone with a v1

$100-150? At what price, your safety?

I agree with the above... I swear by my V-1, but if I had a stricter budget, I'd get a Passport.
