Try holding the VDC button until the light changes colour and try pushing it again after, see if that works.

Apparently there is/was a short at the firewall. They dropped the dash to find it Friday, I should get my car back today.

Exclamation Hill Assist Light 2012 WRX

I see you had an issue with your Hill Assist Light, I am having the same problem. It is intermittent however. The light comes on and off for minutes at a time. It seems to only occur during city driving, and go away when I am on the highway. Could it be mechanical or electrical? or both.

I brought the issue to the dealership twice. First they suggested that the light and Hill Assist feature was designed to go on/off like that. I disagreed because I saw no documentation to suggest that, in fact on the manual it suggests to have the car inspected if the light comes on. I see no reason why the warning light would intermittently illuminate while driving regularly. Friends of mine with similar year WRX's dont see the issue.

Second time around, they said that there are no error codes reported, they couldn't reproduce it, so they could do nothing for me. I left the dealership, and the light came on again.

- When the warning light is off, the Hill Assist works fine, as I can feel it engaging.
- When I am driving in an around the city, the light intermittently comes on.
- When the light is on, the Hill Assist is not working as I checked while on a hill.
- Usually, when I transition to highway driving the light goes off, as in the video.

There is a problem here, but I need to dealer to agree with me that there is and do something about it. Right now, I am stuck.

Has anyone any suggestions for me?

Have you shown the video to the dealership? To SOA?

Exclamation Video

I emailed the video to SOA after I returned from the dealer. They acknowledged receiving it. They then called the dealer in question and replied to me basically summarizing the situation. i.e. they couldn't reproduce it so nothing was or could be done. This was unsatisfactory to me to say the least. They say they got the proof it is happening, but still offer no avenue for me to get it fixed.

I've since replied to SOA saying that didn't answer my question of "What to do now?"

I have also emailed the Parts and Service manager of the dealer in question with the video and the same question, "the problem is real, see the video, what can be done now?"

What do you think?

It's a good approach.

Where do you live? My Subaru dealership is top-notch (both in terms of sales and service), but if you don't live in western NY, this won't help you much.

Exclamation video

I live in the Boston area. Do you really think it is wise to go to another dealer in my area? I assume they have access to all of the records and see my vehicles history. I am assuming they'll also give me a stiff arm. But could be wrong. I dont want to be categorized as the nightmare customer, I just want the problem acknowledged and fixed.

worst they can do is say same thing as first dealer you went to.

From what I gather, there are mod friendly dealer, really strict dealer that you have to restore back to stock to get service.. etc

so every dealer is little bit different

not to mention, technicians are human too, they can make mistakes..

The problem with them being unable to reproduce the issue is, how do you chase down a wiring issue when it is not happening at the time? It would be like showing you a pencil so you know it exists, then putting it in a room with the lights off and telling you to go find it. They could tear apart the car looking for the issue, but that would be time consuming for you and them. Next time it acts up is the time to take it in, the techs get paid per job not hourly so if they can't find anything, they are not going to waste time looking for it and not get paid.

Thank for the suggestions. I plan on bringing it to another dealer based on the last reply from SOA. A fresh set of eyes might find it.

Not feeling the need to read all the posts before I reply I will add:

I too was having a problem with the hill assist.
So I turned it off. Works great now!

Hi All,
In following up with my Hill Assist light issue, I brought it to a different dealer in my area and I at least felt like they were invested in solving my problem and very helpful. I plan on using them in the future.
They spent a number of weeks looking into the problem for me over the Christmas period. They changed a clutch switch that was partially corroded and they had a reprogram of the firmware also available to them to help with the issue.

I'd like to say the problem is fully gone, but the light has come on about 3 times since Christmas. I believe the issue to be improved in as much as it happens less frequently, I have seen it around once a month since getting the car back, but unfortunately I cannot say with confidence the issue is completely gone.

Once a month, I guess is something I can live with.

Michael.
