Default A/C not cold enough 2004 XT

I have had my XT since Dec 03. The automatic AC controls have always been a little erratic in operation, so I usually use the manual. Lately, as it is becoming warmer and sunnier, I don't think the AC is cold enough, even with the temp knob on 65 degrees. It is having trouble keeping up with sunny days and 77 degree outside temperatures (San Diego). Should I have it checked by the dealer or is the AC sysytem just not very robust?

I read on another thread that it's fairly common to find your a/c refrigerant not topped off. It seems that the cars usually come with a partial charge. You should get your refrigerant checked out by someone reputable. I wouldn't go to the dealer though...they're more than likely to tell you nothing's wrong when there is.

The system is supposed to have 20 to 23 ounces of refrigerant. Mine had 16 last month (built in July '03, purchased September).

The AC tech said it was quite common for new vehicles to be underfilled.

I would expect the recharge should be covered by the warranty.

How do you check how much refrigerant is in your system?

Take it to an AC shop if it's not under warranty. They charge about $30 to do a "diagnostic" where they do a pressure test and pump out all the refrigerant, then measure it. If you have no leaks or other problems they put it back plus any extra needed for the full spec' amount. Price is about $10 per pound, so you're talking under $40 total.

Of course it should be covered by warranty so just go in to your Subaru dealer and tell them your AC isn't cold.

Damn, I was just noticing that my A/C is not cold enough! I was afraid that this was as cold as it gets and totally bummed about the upcoming summer in L.A... My car only has 1300 miles on it... I better take it back to the dealer to have the fluids checked.

Mine gets so cold I have to turn it down.

(It's gotten up near 80 degrees F a few times already in March)
