Default Clunk in front suspension...

Hey guys/gals,

I have an 02 WRX with 68,000 kms on it (only major componeny warranty remains) and I have a clunk in the front end when I over any kind of uneven pavement. I have had it at the dealers 3 times to get the clunk repaired and they have tightened every bolt they can see, checked all the motor mounts/bushings and replaced the swaybar endlinks. Nothing has helped. They can't seem to find the problem and now they are saying drive it like that till it gets worse or something breaks, then we'll fix it.

The noise happenes when I hit uneven pavement, maybe a pothole or a manhole cover. The sound happens when either wheel hits a bump but not when both hit the same bump (like a speedbump). That's why they thought it was swaybar related.

There are no broken coils on the springs and everything appears to be fine to the mechanics. The noise is a solid noise, kinda like if you were banging on a plastic jerry can with a wrench and I can feel the noise through my feet very slightly. Like if someone were tapping on the car with something.

I'm kinda loosing my patience with this issue, it's been in 3 times and I've been dealing with the noise for almost 2 months now. It's a loud noise and I don't feel like waiting for "it to get worse or break". I mean, it's a 2002 I spent 43K canadian on (taxes suck) and it clunks like an 84 chevette!

I know it's quite hard to diagnose suspension noise online but any advice you might have on what I should check would be great.

Are you sure it is not when you turn at low speed into, say, a driveway or over some other bump?

Lots of subies do that, mine included, and no one has an explaination.

It feels like a rattle in the floor pan and steering column.

It doesn't happen to me when I go straight, ever, but maybe it could.

I had that noise since day one, turning up into my driveway over the sidewalk there was a slight clunk, but this is in any direction, regardless of accel/decel or braking and about 5x as loud. You can actually hear it from the street when I drive by. It's really got me stumped.

I'm having a clunk fixed. The service guy said it is the strut top mount. Didn't see you mention that at all. I always get it turning in to park.

Thanks, I'll look into that. It's so hard to track these sounds down.

I have this same clunk when I go over uneven payment. It seems like it happens when the wheel drops. I know this is an old thread, but did anyone ever get to the root cuase of the problem?

check you sway bar bushing brackets. if they are too tight, they make that clunk noise. maybe it's a time for you to replace the sway bar bushings or need some lubrication on them.

the bearing plates on the front strut mounts wear out over time and end up with free play when you hit bumps or go over uneven pavement making a clunking noise just replace the mounts should be fine happens alot on japanese cars to

I have the noise too but have 103k miles on my 01 rs.

What exactly are bearing plates?

Probably time for new struts for me as well.

I had a really bad clunking noise in the front of my 02 wrx. it took me about 3 months to figure out. turns out it wasn't anything in the suspention. It was my cold air intake. the bracket that hold it to the fender broke due to engine torque. causing it to bounce around making the clunking noise I heard

Is that an after market CAI?

what is a bearing plate? do you mean Tophat?

If so mine are relatively new. I replaced all the struts last may, there was no change in the clunking after the replacement. W/in the next month or so I'm going to buy an STi set of struts and springs, we'll see if there's a change then.
