Default Borla header people, which muffler?

Hey guys who have Borla headers, what muffler do you have on?

Last week I put Borla headers and Random Cat on my 01 RS. Well before that I just had 2.25” catback with custom made Flowmaster 40 series muffler. It sounded pretty mean with stock headers/cat.

Now with new headers and cat, under a little faster acceleration I get this (still mean) raspy sound, which almost sounds like something is rattling. But nothing is rattling at all though. My theory is that because Flowmaster 40 series is a chamber muffler not straight though (big resonator style) muffler, it makes that sound because it resonates off of the walls in the muffler. I am guessing that a straight through muffler won’t have that almost annoying sound.

All in all it sounds freakishly mean, but maaaaybeee…. it’s not the best for everyday driver. I don’t want to be scaring little children in my neighborhood.

So can someone recommend a different axel-back for me? I am looking for something stock looking, not necessarily shiny, but something that will still be free flowing. And can someone comment on my theory about chamber vs. straight through mufflers?

Here is how skock headers/cat + 2.25" midpipe/Flowmaster muffler sounded like

I will get the new sound clips shortly

Thanks

Alex

Try a magnaflow with a resonator in the midpipe. Its a straight through design, and the resonator keeps the volume low enough not to send school children running for their lives.

I have Borla headers, no cats, and a flowmaster 40 series. I also have a dynomax glasspack kinda thing inline to take some of the resonance out. Its bloody loud, sounds awesome but i do get that raspyness still at certain RPM/throttle settings.

I have the same setup, I've gotten used to the raspyness of it. Mine only does it at full throttle.

i had that setup with the 40 series just that it gave it too much like a "ting" sound rattle it was weird so i ditched it i mean ive experienced 4 exhaust so far and by far the happiest with the HKS. i dunno.

exhaust(s) used: Magnaflow Street Series
Magnaflow Race Series (way loud)
Flowmaster 40 Series
Hks Hi-power exhaust (now, and pleased with it)

borla headers and apexi n1. very nice sound. just wished the cat's heatshield would stop rattling.

honestly tho, if u have borla headers, any muffler would sound nice.

My Setup:

Borla Headers, cat back 2.25" piping w/ Magnaflow resonator, Flowmaster 60 series muffler.

There is absolutely no tingy, or high pitched sound with this setup. Idle is deep and rumbly. On the throttle it sounds similar to a Ducati. (well, the closest motor I can think of that it sounds like)

do the scoobysport, stromung and cobb mufflers sound a lot alike?

there should be a permanent soundclip thread, cuz i know they are out there, it just takes forever to find them.

what would be good with borla headers and stock cats that would give a fairly good rasp-free rumble around town but not give annoying drone on the freeway?

I have Borla headers, Random Tech high flow cat, unresonated Stromung midpipe and the Prodrive oval tip muffler. I'm using the Kartboy hangers too. Those suckers are hard to install on a 40 degree day

I too have the raspiness you describe. And it's loud down low. I was thinking of having an exhaust shop install a resonator in the midpipe to see if it will take it down a notch, but I'm not sure yet.

Flowtech makes a great series of mufflers, the "Raptor" Turbo II mufflers are quiet (not like stock) and have a great sound to them.

besides, they look like a stock muffler and don't have a ricey sound to them.

I just got my borlas installed this weekend and with the 2.25" intermediate pipe w/ a straight through canister it is very mean sounding. Quite loud also. I am not sure I totally like the sound of the borlas though. I will need to give it a few days.

Alright. I have had the borla headers and stock cats on for a month and a half and the Greddy EVO 2 since the first full week of April. The combination is awsome! It is suprisingly quiet @ idle and is not at all obtrusive. Awsome boxer sound and deccelerating is fun to espercially from the 4000rpms to he low 2000's. Bolts up nicely too. If it matters, I have that KARTBOY hangers too. YAY. Actually they are tuff mofo's. Grab the end of the exhaust and puysh/ pull up and down. The whole car moves w/ it. I will post a sound clip within the next week or so.

Nice, This is the setup that I am looking into for my ride (2002 2.5 RS) It would be cool to post a sound clip. Also let me know were you got the stuff from and the total price on the headers and Evo2.

Thanks

Headers from www.nopionline.com and the EVO 2 from www.driftspeed.com . EVO 2 was free shipping; ~$486 and Headers ~ $271 How do I post a sound clip as well as pictures?

Anyone know how to "smoke" the headlamps? Is there a forum on this? Link? Thanks, Brian
