Windshield defect?

Hi all,

The Windshield on my 2002 Forester cracked today apparently without being hit by anything. We're having a cold snap here, and I turned on the front defroster under the wiperblades, and suddenly I have a crack starting from the base of the windshield up about 4 inches.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Its common on all the recent subarus, and other brands as well.

The sunroof on my 2 month old XT cracked recently. No traffic in front of me or coming towards me, nothing hit me. I took the XT to the dealer I purchased it from and was given the "something must have hit you" routine. They said they, nor Subaru, would warranty this item.
My insurance company said get a quote for replacement so I took it to a dealer close to home. They agreed that there was no sign of external damage like a chip and to my suprise they said the crack was due to a stress fault in the glass. They replaced the glass ($600) no charge.

My friends 02 LLBean OB's front sunroof blew when we were driving down the road. All of a sudden Poof! and glass went behind us as we drove down the highway. We just sort of looked at each other and said "Did you hear that?" Pulled over and this is what we saw:

We drive right to the dealer and they took it and fixed it at no cost to him. Sounds like something similar w/ your glass, defect.
