Question Question about radar detectors????

I am planning to get one in the near future so I can avoid getting pulled over, the problem is that they are illegal in Virginia. My question is, When I have one, are police able to detect if i have one or not? That Valentine one looks pretty cool and it comes with that liitle piece i can hide. Does anyone know the cheapest place i can get one?

I don'think that police can detect them, but if you get pulled over and they see one, on or not, you get a $75 ticket, and 2 points on your license.

I don't know where the cheapest place would be to get one...all I can say is plan on going to WVA or MD.

YES police have the technology to detect radar detectors. It is called VG2. Try to find a detector that has this option on it. It turns the detector off when it senses a VG2 unit.

Every detector produces a small amount of radiation that is projected to the front. This is how the VG2 unit detects a radar detector.

Alex,
If you live in an area that radar detectors are illegal, they WILL have some way to detect your radar detector. It may seem silly but they will have a radar detector-detector. Most states are now using VG-2 technology to sense detectors. So, if you still want one, you will need to get one with VG-2 cloaking technology so it will be invisible. I got mine from Ubid which is a pretty good and cheap to get them from. Another cheap place is ebay...hopefully this helps....

VG-2 invisibility simply means that a radar detector has very low microwave emmisions. So low that the VG-2 can not detect them. Most radar detectors advertise thisbut only a few delvier. The V1, most Bells, and a few Unidens all have very low emmisions.

IMO the only detector worth thinking about is the V1. It has the greatest range and the most information. It is pricy but it is the absolute best, when I drive in somebody elses car with a regular detector I feel naked. I hate not knowing how many signals there are or where (espcecially) they are coming from.

I remember a test with the V1 that they had to put the Detector detector right on top of the unit before it went off. Apparently it's very well shielded. The thing is even if it's hidden (see my V1 hidden setup on AZScoobie) if they see you slam on your brakes after they light you up, the'll pull over and look for it.

To get around that, you can use the handbrake (gently) and your brake lights won't light up. Not that I condone stuff like that or anything.

I've been very happy with my Bel Express Li - cordless with all bands and front/rear laser, with VG2 protection. It was $299 a few years ago, but fell of my windshield enough times to slowly break the case open.

I sent it back in May, and they sent me a new one and never charged me. I know they are a bit cheaper now. I always get plenty of warning.

I Love the thing to death... since I'm originally from Ohio, I drove down there to buy it in person (something they're not used to seeing, I'll tell ya. =) Met a couple of the engineers and got the tour of why it's so good, along with their rack of other detectors for comparison testing. The V1 does LOOK a little bulky, but I suppose that's a small tradeoff. It's bigger and squarer because the case is solid metal all around (magnesium, if I remember right) and it has laser/radar sensors front and back.

The first time you drive into a really good speed trap, with one of those trailers, a decoy emitter on the other side of the road, and a cop waiting patiently ahead, you'll kiss it and never look back.

One thing I read about cordless detectors is they cut down the scanning rate to conserve battery life. Funny thing is they bump the rate back up if you do use the wire to power it. Kind of defeats the purpose though.

Here is a good link w/ info. on Detectors

Get a V1.

It saved my A** several times.

One example: I was on I-85 going south and I picked up K band then I sed one of those trailers with the radar on it displaying my speed. Then I seen a second K band come in and then O slowed down. In the trees behind the stationary trailer radar display was shiny Crown Vic clocking southbound traffic.

Sometimes people have V1's on e-bay for sale. Be careful if you get one there though. get the SN of the unit and call Valentine and check if the unit has the latest update in technology. I've had mine since 92 and have sent it back 2X to be upgraded. You don't want to get it and find out it needs to be sent in to be worked on to bring it up to snuff. Just a word of caution, this happened to a friend not too long ago.

Hucker,

I don't know how you guys do it. As soon as I am away from the border I put the V1 back in the window and drive all over Canada with it. I can not drive without it.

I have a friend who lives in Toronto, he owns a V1 but he only uses it here in the states. I don't nkow how he does it, I feel naked without mine.

But then again, it seems that in Canada everyone goes 100MPH (at least on the 401 in Toronto, and also on the A15 in Montreal) and they never get pulled over.

Thumbs up

The V1, in my opinion, is the best on the market. It's saved my ass more times than i can remember. Its got lazer (which i think is stupid, cause once it has detected it, the po already have their fix) oh well, i like it =o)

You guys should be thankfull that you can use radar detectors at all. Up here in the Great White North, they are totally illegal. Although we do have some measures at (trying) beating the cops. First, when I see someone in the other lane flash there lights on and off, and its daytime (or I know for sure my headlights are on), this means, "Watch it, there is a cop ahead". Another fun thing to do is get some stupid punk kid to think he's winning some 130km/h race, when all your doing it setting him out as the lamb in wolf country. But, sometimes they just nab you, and there's nothing you can do about it, except obey the speed limit.

I'm glad I live in California, where RADAR use by the Highway Patrol is regulated and the speed limits are more reasonable.

I feel for you folks back there in the Midwest and East coast, where the speed limits are deliberately set too low for the purpose of generating revenue via RADAR.
