after being parked for awhile the car wont start - i only get a loud single click and no cranking. only after numerous attemps the starter cranks. once it starts everything seems ok. i checked out the battery and alternator and they seem ok.
do car batteries lose the ability to hold the charge when they get old like any other rechargeable batteries? could this be bad starter motor? btw, the car's about 10yrs old and battery 4yrs.

What car is this, if it's 10 yrs. old it's obviously not the WRX-
Check all the connections at the battery and the frame and engine grounds. Exactly how did you check the battery and alternator? |

i went to Sears to check them out where they load the battery while off, then check the volt, etc. while running. However, that was just after driving on fwy for good 10-15 min. The prob happens after i park the car for more than few hours. |

Could also be something wrong with the starter.
Get a voltmeter, when the problem happens check the voltage at the battery, and also right at the starter. If there is a voltage drop causing it you should be able to see it this way. If the voltage at the starter is good but it still doesn't crank the starter may be bad. |

Thanks Mulder. I'll get a voltmeter to run some tests.
So, it happened again this morning. now it sounds more like dead battery (after several try it cranked maybe 1 turn, then after several more tries it starts) I'm guessing my battery's too old to hold the charge overnight...? I'm still confused as to why the car starts eventually at all. |
