I got a crap on deck bad enough to choke a donkey.

It looks like all the Japanese designers graduated from the same school.

Gee, that design doesn't look like it was influenced by the Ford Focus at all...

I don't care for it at all. Then again, I don't like the Focus either.

I guess it is not too bad, but it kinda looks like a Focus front and a Lancer back. Now what I am really interested to see is the Lancer Evo VII and the new Skyline GTR...
oh, dunno why so many new designs alway take this from that car and take that from that one. then put them altogether and make a new design/production..

I don't think you guys realize how freakin' competitive the subcompact-compact market is. Most companies(domestic and many import) barely break even. The domestics are here just to satisfy CAFE regulations(offset those damn trucks) and the few poor bastards that can't afford anything more. Some like GM are basically giving up on the class and heading for the hybrid trends altogether!

Because I enjoy small cars(and can't afford a 328, IS200, A4, etc.), I am limited to the middle ground. Therein lies the problem. Competition in this class of cars mandates that every OEM follow this hideous philosophy called "decontenting." It seemed to grow out of the early-mid nineties when everything was going 'global.' Basically, the OEM looks at the car and says,"What item can I remove or make so damn simple and still have the customer not notice?" That customer being the 90% that buy cars just to get from A to B. That's all and good for profit in a class that's highly unprofitable, but often leads to really bland vehicles that lack the 'detail' that made the vehicle once special. And loved by us... the 10%.

Some companies do it better than others... in that I mean that they manage to save cost, but not sacrefice on the aesthetic. VW comes to mind(they're not Pinninfarina designs by any strecth, but are nice for their class!). I know many of you hate Chryslers - Neons for that matter - but I think their lines are clean and nice. I even like those oval lights! The current gen. is alot better than the prior "cutesy" look... more refined. Nissan... well, they seem to have more energy in their ads than actual desire in their designs. Toyota? Damn! They're lucky they have a ga-zillion dollars worth of Quality Perception(they're good, but they're not as high over everyone else as most of the populus think) to their brand, because they are the kings of decontenting!! Those interiors suck(unless you spend $30+ bones... and then it BETTER be nice for that top dollar!) Honda just plain sucks now!! That makes me angry, because I'm an owner of a '91 Si. It was a Rabbit/Golf copy for sure, but one that was executed alot better than the then current Golf. The '92-'94 was very nice(and the after market exhibits that fact), but then decontenting struck them in a big way. Then came the big ugly lights, nondistinguished fascias, etc. Now the spy shots you see are even worse! I hear they dumped the front wishbones(semi)... sad.

Now comes Subaru's turn. I haven't touched the car, yet so I'll reserve opinions. I love the WRX, 2.5RS looks, but not because it was some paragon of design. It was a clean subcompact with a craaaazy-ass powertrain/chassis and semi affordable price.

uncle!!! uncle!!!

Okay that was lame.

But I do understand exactly how competitive the subcompact market is. Nevertheless this Honda is blatantly copying a competitor.

Since this is a Subaru board though, I think Subaru isn't a player in the subcompact market at all, from a volume standpoint. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this year the 2.5RS outsells the L. I think Subaru can't try to compete with the basic Focus, Civic, Corolla, Protege, etc. and hope to win-- their target market is higher. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Impreza L killed altogether and the new Impreza offered in 2.5RS and WRX trims only.

Wow, I'm very happy that I have a 99 Si. I just have to baby it and in a few years, I'll really have something.

Course, the new Impreza ain't too pretty either. But all this is academic. Give me the new Nissan Z or Silvi and make me happy!

Coming from a 99 Si owner, well, I'm just glad I got mine now. The new civic looks like a Mirage.. if it was made by Toyota instead of Mitsu.

Besides.. the next model year is 2001. Where are the hover cars???

I dunno, that poc looks like a uglier echo to me... The coupe/sedan reminded me alot of the old toyota tercel, kinda of crappy...

Just wait until the wings and body kits start being released

Ahhh oh my god what's happening to the designers? Have they all gone blind and lost complete grasp on good taste? Yah people like the Focus (not sure why I think it is ugly in stock form) but damn there's no need to copy the Focus. If they are going to be this way why don't they all just merge into one big company and they can all jointly produce the biggest cr@p on earth. Come on why even call yourselves designers? All your doing is copying some other design, adding it to your POS and calling it the All New something or another. Come on Nissan, Mazda, Alfa and Peugot!

Well Colin I see more L's here than RS's. I always figured from a business point of view you cut the struggling units.

The rear looks like a Toyota Tercel. The front looks like a even more subtle Civic front end. Oh well at least the new Integra looks to be good.
