Have a Nice Day? Auto-X, Subaru antics, and why I love my car sooo much more....[long]

Well, today was the last Auto-X event here in St. Louis, so a bunch of us made it a meet to show up and race. It rained all day, so that helped our cause. In GS, RSs took 2nd and 3rd, in STS, RSs took 1st and 2nd (I was second.)

After the race and lunch, we decided to go road hunting. We tore around for a while, doing donuts in the grass behind restaurant parking lots, tearing down roads under construction, and other fun things.

Well, after driving around for a little, we spotted a cool looking gravel road, and decided to check it out. The road was long, and pretty straight, there were pleanty of small turns to keep it interesting. There was a small grass hump that ran along the middle of the road, the whole way down. On either side was farm feild and, off the road was about a 6" dip, then a really steep incline that went up over a foot, and a VERY sharp angle. Then, it was into the farmland. I was in the lead, Jeff (10th warrior) was behind be, and Shawn (STiShawn) brought up the rear. On the initial time down, we took it a little slowly, being unfamilliar with the road. We got further down, and spotted a house, we figured we might as well turn around, so we spun around, and took off, at high speed.

Shawn was in the lead, Jeff next, then me. As we were going, I slowed up a little, then got on it. Third gear vaporized, then 4th came on strong, doing at least 60 the car started to get skittish. I hit a small bump and the car started to fishtale. I kept on it, and managed to straighten the car out. I figured I was going a little to fast, so I let off the gas to slow down...

The instant I did that, I must of hit another dip. The back end of the car started to come around. It swung left, and the car swung right, then the tale swung back around, and the car slid left, at close to a 35-45 degree angle to the way I was sliding. I hit the slope to the side of the road with a pretty steep angle of attack, doing at the least 50mph. The car instantly caught air, and flew for about 4-6 feet before landing. The right wheels hit first, and dug into the ground, HARD. The car started to lean over to the side it hit.

At this moment, all that was going thru my head was the movie of Pat's Legacy rolling. The car was leaning the same way, and the rate it was spinning wasn't slowing. Then, the car stopped itself, and planted it's left wheels back on the ground.

I had pushed the clutch in when the car was in the air, and I sat there with it in for a split second in shock. Then, I threw it into first, and took off. I got behind Jeff and flashed him with my hi beams, then threw on my hazards. We pulled into a subdivision, and I told them what happened. Then we looked at the car.

The damage? None, we couldn't see a single thing wrong. The car drove fine, actually it drove like it wanted more. All there was was mud and crap stuck all over the car.

We took pics, and decided to head back to the scene, and get pics there. Then Jeff and Shawn saw the damage. Needless to say, they were surprised as me to see the car wasn't damaged, or on it's roof. We got pleanty of pics to help out, and I'll post them as soon as I can.

After today, I love my car SOOOOO much more. I don't know how it stayed on all four wheels, but some guys at an auto-x put it best. The car handles like a cat, claws thru corners, and wants to keep all four on the ground.

Dude. You got lucky. Be thankful that there weren't any curbs nearby, and that you didn't have your wheels turned too much when you hit!

Go back to the dealer, hand him your keys, and tell him that you cannot drive your car.

I still haven't curbed a tire, and this is the first radical loss of control in the 7 months I've had the car. You've had yours what, a month, and you already trashed a rim, and broke a ball joint.

Yeah, baby! It's all about learning how the car handles!

I will agree 100% that the car's engineered VERY well - I'm amazed that all I did was bend a wheel (which wore against the ball joint and that's why it needs to be replaced :P). Other cars would have had to have control arms and axles replaced, etc. The car simply rocks.

it was definetly a good day, espeacally since everyone and the cars (mostly) are ok. Mostly you ask. well, i damaged my bumper a wee bit. i'd like to say it was from gravity forcing me back onto the ground on that gravel road, but no, its from doing a u-turn and the wheels sliding and there just had to be jagged metal thingys right there to start poking holes drifting through a rainy auto-x, driving nice and quick through rough, washboarded corners, trying to make up for Bunrie's incomplete on a gravel road the impreza handles AMAZING. 3 mph turn around and it slides oh well, it was well worth it. all i know anymore is that we need a rally-x here. bad.

It was quite freaky to see the actual tracks I had assumed he was over reacting till I saw the tracks,...nothing,...and then an impact point. It flew for a good 6 feet over and into the field. Lucky was the key word. I think it was his cars way of getting him back for me and my 99 beating him in the auto cross.....yes Joel, I have brakes. Over all it was a blast, and what a great way for Subaru Enthusiasts to enjoy their cars, road, rain and dirt, throw in a little air and its a rally.

i decided to check my alignment today and everything was in spec except the right rear toe was way negative. i fixed that but while i had my car on the rack i looked over the bottom (first time i'd put my car up) and it is pretty. although i am definetly getting skidplates. there was mud thrown all over the fuel tank and rear diff. the tank actually has little mini skidplates on its front end and that's were most of the mud was, but still...one well placed rock...

shawn-i sent you a pm
