Post Dream garage - Device to lift

Hi,

I will be moving in my new house in december. I have there a nice garage which is 24'x36'x12'. Is there some kind of a lift on the market that I could install without going all out for a professionnal unit that can raise the car 10 feet in the air? The ceiling is 12' high so a 5' raise would be good. If you know the price for such a device, that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JF

PS If you happen to have had good experience with air compressors (oil), let me know.

PPS This is Sube related as this will be for my RS.

There are several such devices advertised in the back of Autoweek - a weekly publication with an extensive classified section.

Cool

The electric auto lifts are new from $1500 and work great...a compressor for the garage would be 5-6hp, verticle tank of 60-100 gallons and Sears has it all...even online for 10% discount for "Craftsman Club" members

Cool

umm. large garage. A word of advice. Make sure you put either an i-beam in the roof for a engine lift or buy an engine hoist! it is always needed.

But probably the most realistic things to buy is a good Compressor, and a good welder. you will use them the most.

Also put in a work bench with a drill press, nice big vice, and a bench grinder. and if you are real rich. get a parts washer.

Then you add this all up and notice that you can go insanely crazy buying stuff for your garage!!

Dream garages ahhh, R&T did an article on them about a year ago.
My uncle in law has one of these lifts (forget what it's called). It's really cool can be used with the wheels on or off. I think he only paid $1200 for it. He recently got a plasma cutter. Man does that thing rock! Cuts right through beam frames and unibodies like a hot knife through butter. Takes major power and fuel though. He mostly works with classics, muscle cars and street rods. His garage aint pretty, but man does he have some serious tools and vehicles.

My friends father has a lift in his garage, it's a beautiful thing to have. I'll ask him if he knows anything about getting one now. the one he has is older. but it's definetly something you should get.

Wow thanks Felix

Jaybird, I think one of the lasts SCC had a Dream Garage project also. They started with a concrete coating made of epoxy I think(that's in my future plans as well).

Now, for a lift, it starts at 2500$US (that's 3800$CDN for me which is a little steep for a non-serious mechanic like myself). Is there another solution like ramps that could lift manually or ramps with pods that lift the car up? I would still need to access under the car and be able to change tires, brakes, etc.

This thread is getting very interresting! Thanks all,

JF
