Post Looking to get a 2.5 RS

Greetings,

I am hoping to purchase an Impreza 2.5RS. It has been a car I have wanted for some time as I think rallycross is awesome. I found a 1998 Impreza 2.5 RS Coupe at a dealer around here... it has 24,000 miles on it, a manual transmission, cd player, and moonroof. The car also has 1 year/12,000 miles left on the bumper to bumper factory warranty. The dealer is asking $15,995 for it. Does this price seem reasonable? I was hoping to be able to get it to around 14,000 or 14,500 out the door... how does this sound?

Secondly, I am going to take a look at it tomorrow... is there anything in particular that I should check for, such as known problems that this year/model are prone to? Possibly something that can be used towards getting a lower price?

All thoughts, ideas, and comments are greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Just lettin ya know...

Moonroof is standard. CD was 400 extra from the factory.

I think it's a good price.

Check for the clutch, which has been a noted problem. The weak clutch is a definite issue. Also mention the fact that it's the Phase 1 DOHC engine with a much less smooth torque curve than the new SOHC engine. Also mention that it's no longer made and is the only model year with that DOHC. It also has slightly less power than the 99 and 00s.

I think 15k for a gently used MY98 with low mileage is okay. But 14k would be much better. Have you gotten the Kelly Blue Book value on it yet?

Keep in mind throughout that used cars are where salesmen make their money. Make sure to take note of that fact. He's making way more money than on a new vehicle. Remind him of that.

What color, if I may ask? If it's green or red, use that against the dealer, as green and red aren't offered anymore. For that matter, neither is the white-it was changed to aspen white in 99.

Have a good one...good luck with the car!

Rax,

There are a few things you should look out for (and hopefully others can add to this) -

1) Check the power windows. They should move easily up and down with no sign of struggle. At the same time check for some vertical scoring or scratches running up along somewhere near the center of the windows.

2) If the windows have been tinted (or even if they hadn't been) they may not seat (seal) against the weather strips as tightly as they should. I recommend you subject the car to one of those touchless car washes, or any place which thrashes the car with high pressure water - there shouldn't be a drop of water coming in.

3) Check for scoring along the ABS brake lines which run along the passenger side of the motor. On some cars, for some reason, the lines run too close to the motor and they rub against it (the stock motor mounts are soft and when the car is driven hard the motor literally whacks itself side-to-side).

4) Test the clutch when the car is stone cold. The clutch should not grab but engage smoothly with no sign of shudder.

5) Some cars have this dreaded hesitation problem. The car will suddenly lurch and/or bog. It can happen unexpectedly in any gear and RPM whether accelerating hard or not. Put the car 'through the ringer' and make sure it doesn't do that. Don't be afraid to hit that rev limiter.

6) The rear wheel bearings have a reputation of going bad very quickly. The problem is not with the bearings proper, but with how they had been installed at the factory. Do a test drive on a smooth road and listen carefully. From a dead stop accelerate smoothly and calmly. If you hear a sound similar to the kind winter tires make, which increases in frequency with the road speed, then the bearings are suspect.

The car is a blast - you'll have fun. Good luck.

Regards,
Ed.

If it's green that's cool. Green is rare, very rare among RS's. I love green.

It is black. The Kelley Blue Book value appears to be $16,970... seems a little bit out of proportion...

However, the clutch problem will be a good thing to know if necessary... along with the change in engines, I was unaware of this...

Thanks a lot for your help... I hope the everything goes well with the car because I would really like to get it!

well, things went terrible... the car was in good shape... there some things wrong with it and such... but it went really bad when we started talking about price... the guy wouldn't even negotiate with me... I gave him an offer and he wouldn't even make a counter-offer on it... I was able to talk him down to $15,250 but that is still too much... the guy was a complete moron... I suggest avoiding Brunswick Nissan and Subaru.. in Ohio

Now, I doubt I will be able to find another RS...
