I'm really beating up the wrx in miles; i'm considering getting a 2nd car.
But i'm cheap, so the car will have to be too. Any recommendations from subaru? Or anything else?

Get an 88-89 GL 4WD wagon... dual range 4WD, has fuel injection, some get 30-35 MPG (cars vary though... so test it out)
I have one in oregon with 266K on the clock that would be right at the $1000 mark (rebuilding the engine right now)... but its probably too far and its marked for someone else anyway. |

If you get a non turbo they are generally pretty trouble free. The 5 speeds are good, the 3AT transmissions are pretty crappy, so I would get a stick. Things to watch:
Head gaskets, with higher mileage they CAN develop a leak, new gaskets will fix it, but if you dont have the time or know how it can be pricey. Not to say these cars are notorious head gasket blowers, but if you heat them up they can do it. Turbos love to crack heads and blow head gaskets though (from my experiences anyway) timing belts and oil pump gasket and water pump should be changed religiously every 60K. Try to get records of this. So get one that doesnt use coolant and doesnt use much oil and has current maintenance and you are probably fairly safe. Just keep an eye on all the fluids and they will be trouble free. |
