Post Go Richard! Go!

Currently stage 4 in the San Remo Rally and Richard is 2nd, just 12 seconds behind Panizzi(Peugeot) who is in 1st place. McRae, despite his facial injury, is in 10th place.

It is crucial that Subaru get a top podium finish if we have a chance at the manufacturer's Title. Richard is only 2 points behind the Gronholm for the Driver's Championsip. Gronholm is currently 5th after 4 stages. Looks like all 3 Peugeots are in scoring points.

Post

At the last Rally, Corsica Rally, his car rolled off a sweeping left turn(in 6th gear apparently so this was high speed), down a cliff and fractured his cheek bone. They had to cut the car open to get him out, as he lay there unconcious. He was able to stand up on his own. They performed surgery on him a few days later(about two weeks ago) and now he's back.

He races for Ford but this is the man that made the Impreza - the rally car it is today. Richard Burns is filling his shoes quite well - he just needs to win the Championship.

These Peugeot's are starting to worry me!

Burnsie better follow through with the new Impreza, cause getting wooped at their own game is not going to look good on Subaru.

This rally thing is the only thing they are really known for, so they have no choice but to be the best!!

Cool

Subie Newbie,
McRae has only won one title. Subaru have won three titles however.

As for Peugeot, they have a fantastic car and team. They have a reputation in rallying for getting it right. In the '80s, they blew all the oppostion away with the 205 Turbo 16, and don't be surprised if they do it again with the 206.

The new Impreza is prety much Subarus only hope of keeping up with them.

Smaller cars seem to have the advantage over the longer Subarus and Mitsubishis. Short and wide seems to be the way to go. Toyota and Ford dueled last year(Subaru came back later on the gravel roads of Australia and Great Britain). This year it's Ford and Peugeot.

Luckily, mud, dirt and gravel seem to be Impreza's territory whereas tarmac is well suited for the Peugeots.

Wink

Hmm,
So out of the 9 gravel round so far, the score is:

Ford - 3
Subaru - 3
Peugeot - 3

....and for asphalt:

Ford - 1
Subaru - 0
Peugeot - 1 (probably two by Sunday)
Mitsubishi - 1

Now, what was I saying about Peugeots........

Snoopy, Makinen 'rolled' off the road at Corsica (lost the back end). McRae LAUNCHED off the road! Did you see the Speedvision coverage with the in-car footage? One second they're rallying, the next it's Air McCrae! Gotta watch out for car launching cliff faces. Loix was the worst though, turn 3 of the first stage. That thing was smashed. That car will not be fixed (so I've heard - Makinen's was).

I saw the footage. He did the usual oversteer to enter the left sweeper but the front of the car clipped the left side of the road and the the car tilted. So he did both: he rolled and then flew off the road!

Yikes!

Geezer,

The Impreza is holding its own against the smaller cars in the off road events. But those little cars are just a tad easier to control through those sharp corners. A tad shaves off several seconds on a day of rallying. After two or three days, it shaves minutes.

Hmmm......usually the F2 Citreons have been the dominators in the tarmac events.

Yeah, the Peugeot really hauls ass. Having owned both a sporty Peugeot and an Impreza I bet you can guess which I prefer !. French styling is hard to beat sometimes though, Peugeot 205 1.9GTI is still a car to reckon with in Europe.

Ah yes, but there seems to be dissention among the Peugeot ranks, check out this little blurb about leg 1 I found on Autosport...

----------
The fighting on the stages almost spilled over into the service area today as tensions ran high in the Peugeot camp. Francois Delecour was incensed to discover that his team mate Gilles Panizzi appeared to have started his recce for the San remo Rally earlier than permitted and after the first pair of stages the simmering row threatened to boil over into a full-blown fight.

Delecour was only just restrained at the service control from taking a swing at his team mate who was leading the rally with ease. Delecour slipped into second spot at the expense of Richard Burns who, despite setting the fastest time on the opening stage, could not maintain his pace over the remaining seven tests today.

French....heheh.....I'm not surprised. Listening to Panizzi talk in the Corsica Rally pretty much summed up his tenacity to win - to hell with team orders! Delacour was the same way.

We need Liatti back in Subaru's team. He was excellent on tarmac. Remember 1997? He won a couple of tarmac events....and placed 2nd to Makininen on another.

I expected more from Petter Solberg in this event. Well, he's young and new to Subaru so next year he should be a force to reckon with....I hope.

Yeah the Peugeot's are frightening indeed. I just bought a 1:18 scale of the Esso sposored one that is in GT2. Great car. I hope the new Impreza rally car picks it self up and starts on ints dominating ways of the mid-late '90s

He must be OK though, that's the main thing. The BBC News has the following report :

"Title contender Richard Burns has been forced to retire from the San Remo Rally after sustaining major damage in a crash on the 10th stage.
The British driver went off towards the end of the 37.7km "Monte Ceppo" run after he ran wide at the second gear left-hand corner, damaging the radiator in his Subaru.

He then drove a further 14km without any water to cool his engine and subsequently retired when he was unable to restart his car."

"I've now got to win the final two rallies in Australia and Britain to realistically win the title but I still think I can do it."

That's the spirit Richard ! Kick ass !
