Default Issues with HVAC controls...

My car's HVAC system is going nutty right now. Almost nothing comes out when the fan is set to 1-3 but on 4...whoa! Feels stronger than the normal 4. Same thing with the AC on. My dealer at home in Orange County wants to replace the fan and fan control system (IIRC), and I haven't taken it to the dealer up at school yet. However, the fan seems to be fine since it blows like no other on "4"...which leads me to believe it's the fan controller that is actually the problem. Is this something easily replaceable, or better left to the dealer. Or am I completly wrong and need to replace my fan as well?
Thanks,
Chris

There is a resistor assembly that provides the voltage drop to run the fan at the lower speeds, this module is probably bad. The dealer should be able to figure this out, it isn't that difficult.
The resistor module is installed in the bottom of the HVAC box, to the left of the fan. You can remove the glovebox and take it out yourself to inspect it, if it's burned out it should be obvious. It can also be checked with an ohmeter.
If you pull it out and it's bad just take it to the nearest dealer and get a new one.
The fan itself is fine, if it runs on the highest speed there is nothing wrong with it.
