Question Searching boards all day with no luck....

Hi everyone...
I have been searching the boards all day to find topics that breakdown the differences between the '98. '99, and '00 Impreza 2.5RS.
I have not been able to find it.
I am really interested in buying one but am not sure which would be a better bet...I would also plan on putting a Turbo. (could this effect my descision??)

Any/all help is greatly appreciated!
Thanx,
Pete

I think the 98 and it's DOHC and not-gimpy MAF sensor is the best, but the phase II bottom end that they introduced in the 99 is stronger.

No two ways about..

getta a 98 with the hot wire MAF.

no discussion, really.. Just a lot of 1st hand experience. ( owning a 99 hot film MAF Turbo)

Whatever you do DO NOT get a MY00.. coz you up for another $2500 from a errrm "local supplier"

Strongly disagree here!!

Stay away from Phase I bottom end!!

MY00 + TEC-II + Turbo =

My 2cents.

I thought that the MY00+ was the consesus on the way to go because of the MAP and rear LSD?

WOW...now I am REALLY confused
I was told that the MY98 was not very smooth but was better for a turbo.
I am a little confused about the "Phase's" ??
WHich is better and why?
Also is the impreza a good candidate for a Turbo??

Thanx,
Pete

Impreza is fine for a turbo. You just have to spend a lot of money. Either spend a lot of money to build the engine up so it can handle the turbo (recommended), or spend a lot of money to constantly rebuild the engine.

Another difference between the Phase 1 and Phase 2 is that the Phase 1 pistons did not have skirts That is why the piston have been known to "rock" within the cylinder walls which in turn destroys piston rings, cylinder walls, etc..

IIRC the bearing mains were also beefed up on the Phase 2 motors therefore making for a stonger motor which will allow you to make more reliable power.

The SOHC heads on the Phase 2 motors also flow better that the DOHC variants. COBB Tuning has shown that on there flow bench testing.

Simply put, the phase 2 motor is the FAR better choice for a turbo set-up.

My 2cents.

I agree Markus, but the catch is that mid-late production 98 Forester and 2.5RS had a PhaseII shortblock with DOHC heads.

THAT would be the best 2.5RS to start with as long as you don't care about 1) having the older front fascia 2) quite possibly having an older 4 bolt tranny 3) not having rear LSD (2000+)

Read Trey Cobb's post here to find out how to spot a MY98 "Phase 1.5" : http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum1/HTML/010028.html
