Post Anyone seen the AutoWeek WRX rave yet?

Just came in the mail today, confirming the 218-hp figure. Apparently, U.S. models lose 3 hp somewhere, but the reviewer, Russell Bulgin, just raves about the car. As a Legacy wagon owner, I'm already jealous...

No, just the WRX. Much of the article delineates Rex's family tree, but the test drive comments are rather extensive, including the 0-60 in 5.9 secs number.

He calls it "lithe, alive, and glued to the asphalt," and says that the new one has a more supple ride than the old Impreza, yet with improved grip and handling.

I read it last night. It was a very complementary article.

Yes, 0-60 in 5.9 seconds.
Yes, 215 hp.
A very nice picture of a UK WRX wagon at dusk.

And Autoweek has been wrong before - but that is usually the exception, and only applying to pre-production vehicles.

I think we are going to have to accept 215 and be happy with it. Anything else is gravy. (Mmmm . . . gravy . . . )

i heardly ever see bad reviews for anything... but if you want to see a review that absolutely kills a car, check out www.edmunds.com, and look at their road test of the 2001 Saturn SC2. wow, what a basher

As for the WRX. 215hp, or whatever? hey, 0-60 in under 6 ticks? good enough for me!

Uh, I disagree.

Autoweek reviews cars for their intended purpose, and certainly does not praise everything. They usually offer a list of positives and negatives for each car.

I remember when the new Jetta came out, and they trashed its soft suspension and greater heft, as compared to the 3rd generation model. But then AW stated that it will find more US buyers with the softly sprung car, and the added heft helped to move the car upmarket.

Anyway, Russell Bulgin is AW's UK correspondent - so I am sure he has driven the previous generation Impreza Turbo many times. Why should we belittle his review? Oh wait - you haven't read it yet, have you?

IMHO, Autoweek is one of the best mag's out there for the pure car and auto racing enthusiast. It's written by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. It's the one magazine I almost always read cover to cover. The great thing is it comes every week so they usually have new info out before everyone else. For this reason, they do make an occational mistake, but they always fess up to it in their corrections column.

Yeah,

I read the article too. The US version will supposedly be receiving 3 cats and maybe that's why it is 3hp less.

Great, just what we need, an extra cat.

How many cats are we going to end up with for the 2010 model?

My guess is one whole long cat from the cat onto the muffler. No piping involved. hehe.

215hp or not, its great that we are getting this car! The (developing) aftermarket for Subaru will certainly provide for modifying the US Spec. WRX to higher power. This is going to be an AWESOME car to have as a baseline for creating a mud-eating, auto-x winning, stoplight burning, quartermile cruising, road course torque monster!

Seriously, if it is 215, what will a full exhaust, intake, and a chip do for it? A guess of 240hp is conservative. That amount of reliable power to all four wheels in a car that weighs roughly 2900lbs on an improved chassis for under $30,000 is more than I could ask for...

I can't WAIT to get my hands on one of these...

I just hope there is an aftermarket headlight kit available... the round neon lights have to go... :-)

This confirms the more reliable reports on HP and 0-60 figures we've had so far.

215HP doesn't bother me.

As for Autoweek. I dunno, a friend of mine has an Echo, and I think it's a great car for what it is, especially when you consider price.

If you want to see an article on the new Impreza then check out CAR magazine. It's a European sister mag to Motortrend. In the latest or maybe last month's issue it has an article on the new impreza, the PRODRIVE P1 and a comparison between an old M3 and a used turbo Impreza. Also there was an article on a concept car built by Mazda called a 626 LMP(i think) that is AWD with a V-6 that is seen as a WRX and EVO competitor.

Agree, I think Echo is a very well done car of its class. Of course you can't compare it to the Impreza, it's in a totally different league.
The car has a decent look, excellent fuel economy, great handling of its size, and well designed confort and good quality. It's perfect as an entry level vehicle.

"Wah! 215 hp! Wah!"

C'mon, people! 215 hp!! That's 50 more than we have in the cars we're currently raving about! That's 30% more power to start with...

I've been fantasizing for three years about paying 3 grand for a supercharger just so I can get to that level.

215 hp?! That kicks butt!

My 2¢,
