Post Placing EGT probe behind turbo

Is it ok to place my EGT probe behind the turbo (just because it will be easier to do so)? Will I still be able to get reliable temperature readings that I can use for tuning? I know the readings will be about 500F lower. Does anybody have there EGT probe mounted behind the turbo, and what kind of EGTs are you running?

Tim, Sorry mate but it would be self defeating putting the EGT after the turbo. The turbo is powered by the drop in enthalpy of the exhaust gas which comes more from the heat than the pressure drop across the turbine.

quote:"I know the readings will be about 500F lower."
To get an accurate temperature drop across the turbine, you'd need the isentropic efficiency of the turbine yet that value changes depending on its RPMs.

Basically, the whole point of an EGT gauge is not to be guessing cylinder temps. Just put the probe 2" from the head in one of the headers. After all the work involved installing a turbo, why skimp on effort here.

Wink

Andy ~~ Say wha'? Good to see you guys have a couple of minutes to stray online again.

Tim ~~ Andy is right, why go through all the effort of turbocharging and then do a less than sufficient job installing the EGT probe? I've got some pictures on my site of the install RalliSpec did on my car. Clean and effective.

Cool

Hi guys..

In the ideal world you should run EGT probles by the ports of each cylinder and monitor each one.

But this isnt really practicle for most road cars, the second best is in the headers, before the turbo.

As a last resort after the turbo.

I have seen temp differences (drop) of about 100 degrees across the turbo (average)... Lagging the headers/HPCing will make a difference too.

Mine is mounted in the headers.. but I have aftermarket equal length, HPC'ed and fully lagged ones

J.

Put it after the #4 cyl(drivers/rear) header. Most subbies tend to fry #4 first.

Mark
with EGT after #4
