Unhappy Hard first gear after Kartboy/Cusco

Help. After installing a Kartboy shifter and Cusco bushings it has become more difficult to shift into first gear. It is almost impossible to get to first unless the car is stopped. Even then it is difficult and feels "crunchy". I have tried loosening the bolt on the shifter but it made no difference. Any ideas??

Hmmmmm... I'm sure your dealer will say it is a failsafe, but I can get mine into first at 20-25 mph without much trouble. You might need to blip the throttle and bring up the RPM's a bit before shifting into first so that the syncros have less of a hard time to mesh together correctly.

Did you put the bushing plate back properly?

If your exhaust is quiet you can hear the gear box winding up. If your going 50 or so, push the shifter towards first, you'll hear it wind, and in about 5 seconds or so it will engauge...Just dont drop the clutch (Bye Bye Tranny) Just a safety thing I belive

Important question: how many miles are on your car? I found that it takes @7,000 miles for the stock tranny&shifter to break in properly.

Hey, I have a similar problem ... but no shifter kit ! It only happens after leaving home (!???) and goes away after a few minutes (warms up I guess). For the 1st few stop signs, I can't downshift to 2nd & I have to wait before I can get into 1st when stopped. It's really annoying & disturbing ! I was wondering if it could be because of the synth. oil that was put in (Sube dealer) before last winter ?
Any help / info / suggestions are gladly welcome.

Thanks
Phil

Exactly!!! That's a good way to put into words what I have been experiencing. It's just harder to shift for some reason (not just first either but first is the most notable). I put the CUSCO bushings in first, then later the Kartboy shifter and I didn't notice this until the shifter install. I've also tried loosening the bolt some but it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

I mentioned this to Kartboy and his suggestions were "screw too tight" and "add grease" but then it started to loosen up some (it loosens up a bit after a couple weeks) so I didn't continue conversing with him about it. It didn't loosen up enough however and shifts are still difficult. I plan to get some people to try out the shifter at the Teague's Auto meet (especially Dale Teague) and see if any ideas materialize (hopefully some of them have experience with the CUSCO/Kartboy combo and know what it "should" feel like).

BTW: I've got about 14.5k miles on my tranny so I don't think it's break in related.
