Default Detroit area and car safety?

I live in ann arbor, but I go to detroit occasionally for community service related things.

Often during the day like.. 8am-8pm

Sometimes at night 7pm-12am?

The area I'm talking about is the area surrounding the old chinatown, like cass and petersboro.

I have the stock security system and I drive an 04 WRX. no mods.. nothing.. no flashy stereo.

should I be worried about theft?

I'm asking you guys cause I moved here from california, so I kinda know the area but not that well. I know detroit is not the best area. Any detroit locals can answer these questions for me?

Not very many Subies stolen around here. Just not popular enough for thieves.

Yeah I'll agree w/ hondaslayer.... I live down at 3rd and forrest (a few blocks northa of where you're at). and havent had anyone mess with my car (knocks wood).....

One thing is that DO NOT leave any thing of any value visible inside your car. In fact I have friends who leave their cars unlocked to prevent having to replace the windows.

Wacha doin down in the corridor?

as stated above (in both posts) there either has to be a large market for "used" parts, or major bling involved for your car to be targeted... as long as you dont have anythign valuable that could make it teh target of a smash and grab, or chrome dubs, a WRX is fairly safe, as teh market for parts is too small.

are you familiar with detroit summer? It's a summer program for youth which has the work in community gardens, paint murals, etc. and engage in alot of political/race issues dialogue. I'm working with them on thusdays.. well kinda.. I'm working with a seperate program that's affiliated with detroit summer called detroit asian youth, but they're with detroit summer on tuesdays and thursdays.

thanks for the info guys.

leaving doors unlocked is unwise in a MT car though right? cause then they can just push start the car and then byebye

They can always break the glass, get an umbrella or something to
push the lever out of gear (without opening the door)
and still roll it away.

better yet, they'll just tow it.

Can't stop thieves from our mickymouse factory security
system if they really want your car.

you still can't pushstart the car without the key in teh "run" position - first, the ECU and fuel pump will not be running, so no fuel and no spark, second, the steering wheel will eb locked, so they will either only be able to go straight ahead, or in a circle... may as well jump-start teh car.

Any security system, mickey-mouse or not is really just a token effort to keep casual thieves away anyways, and in the event of a smash+grab (more common than an actual auto theft, or taking a stereo, especially in that area, where the thief probably just wants some quick $$ fo a rock or two) no security system will help, as by the time someone can react the perp will be long gone with your backpack/cds/laptop/whatever.

I used to live in that area back in the 80's-90's. I went to Burton middle school right there on the corner of Peterboro and Cass. And I also went to Cass Tech high school, so I'm very well aware of the area you are talking about. I'm not sure if you work with alot of people but I would probably park closer to Peterboro and Woodward, but I think there's a euro-car shop (or chop shop ) right next to the school on Cass.
It really wasn't that bad of a neighborhood when I lived there. I think Burton has a big parking lot area next to it, so that might also be a good place to park. It's a shame that the chinatown you talked about is just a "street" rather than a real one like in bigger cities. But hey, if you need more info or whatever, PM me. I'm also kinda interested in that program you are involved in. Anything to help Detroit is a good thing.

if you're intersted but that site is a little old

detroit asian youth doens't have a website yet, as it's a new program

but both of these are spawned by the boggs center

I went to school with the webmaster of that site, well, her sister. And I would assume she is involved with the program also. Her dad has been a involved with all kinds of charity work around detroit, even back in middle school.

Very cool. I will pass this along to some other friends of mine.
