Question Will there be touring cars at RFK this summer?

I remember the National Grand Prix hosted either a week/weekend long racing event at RFK stadium during the summer two years ago. I know this past summers event was cancelled for some reason...but I was wondering if anybody has heard anything regarding summer '04? I would really love to see some touring cars duking in it out in person.

I don't think american lemans series will ever come back to DC. It was cancelled last year because of noise complaints from the previous year Washington DC really screwed that deal up badly, they paid something like 10 million to set up a race track that was used for 3 days. It really sucks that they let a few noise complaints cancel the whole series of races they had set up, there had to be a way to work things out with the community.

Oh well I am glad I went all 3 days the one year when it was here, it was schweeeet.

They cancelled it over noise? Good grief! WE seriously need those touring cars to come back! Slim speedy you are lucky you got to enjoy them while they were here, I didn't get that chance.

I was there. Yes it was loud but watching the Ferarri's and Porsches, Corvettes, etc. run by you at 100+ mph was worth it.

Summit Point bought all the track barriers, so now it's one big parking lot.

Yup, those bastards. They have noise anyway.

I am glad I was able to go that year and watch from Roger Foo's pit. Too bad he crashed out so early.

A friend of a friend bought the rest of the assets, including pedestrian bridges, grandstands, other miscellaneous items, for something like $5k.

The price DC paid for them over $1M. Of course, they required some absurd amount of semis to get all of the stuff out of whereever it was stored.

I went as well, with slim, and it was really an awesome time. I think we walked around the first day with an ear-to-ear grin the entire day.

That said, it definately was LOUD -- I find it hard to believe that the series was cancelled due to noise complaints. Who the hell thought it wouldn't be loud??? Duh. I think this was more of a crooked, corrupt, backroom sorta deal where they forced things thru, ignored the residents, and a few people got paid. I wonder if they even expected it to last more than one year...

Yeah..DC REALLLLYYY screwed themselves with that whole deal. Not only will the ALMS never come backbut when the olympic committee took a close look at the way ALMS was treated they were not too impressed. The actually cited it as a primary reason for not choosing DC to host the olympics.

I mean really...if DC can't handle 3 days of noise how are the going to handle 3 weeks + of a couple million people.

But has everyone forgotten how damn hot it was those three days...I dont think I have ever sweat that much before. At least they let me bring a gallon jug of water with me into the event.

No, the neighbors whined and cried about noise (even though noise from the football games at RFK was substantially louder) so they could get themselves on TV, and of course the media played them up as huge victims.

The track has been mostly dismantled, and there is now talk of putting in a baseball stadium where it used to be.

Im glad I got a shirt at the only National GP ever.....

So it sounds to me like we are never going to have the National GP at RFk any more if they sold all their stuff and DC screwed up relations. Man, I had no idea how badly DC fumbled the ball with the racing series.

Wow, and I thought I was a cynic. Whether or not that's why they cried about the noise, there is no way that the noise from a football game at RFK is louder than having a couple of Panoz blast by 50 yards from your front door on a Sunday afternoon.

And it wasn't really DC that did this per se, but mostly Goldwater and a few other people at the DC Sports Comission that rigged things up.

I know a way. It's called, "raze the armpit of a community to the ground", then there will be no "houses" for the people to live in and complain.

I went too. Painfully loud, but tolerable with earplugs. It's truly sad that they couldn't suck it up for a few days.

Apparently a cash infusion to a run-down part of DC < slight inconvenience for a week.

Perhaps NOVA should start petitioning for their own sports car race?

I'm surprised they haven't built a track yet in deep southern maryland. They have MIR at Budd's Creek, not to mention the dirt bike track. I think there are no neighbors to complain.

Why can't someone just buy a huge farm down there and build a track for an annual race (though in that area, I'd think they would want nascar more).

that DC track was really mickey mouse...it was just over one mile long if I recall...I watched it on TV, and it looked pretty lame. If DC wanted to do it right they would have the course go around the mall, ans Hanes point. But that will never happen.

I found out about the NGP July 21, 2001. And it tookme 2 years to secure sponsorship for that race from a local business owner. (big business really, 145 fast food stores in the mid Atlantic area)
The day they announced the race was cancelled, he called me within minutes of the papers getting the news, and said we would have to part ways and wouldnt consider any other venues, like Road Atlanta( where he has 88 stores) so the National Grand Prix is a sore subject for me. Other wise i would have to spend my own 10k for a Speed World Challenge TC ride. Which wasnt an issue, PRIOR to getting married last fall....................need I say anymore !!!!!!!!

What is the status of the RFK track now? Can people go and run their cars there, or do we have to go all the way the hell out to Summit Point?

RFK track is now just a 10 million dollar parking lot.
