Question Pulling the check engine light codes Attn: ColinL and anyone else

well i got a check engine light this morning so i did a search... ColinL had posted to connect the green plugs on the drivers side and watch the engine light or malfunction light to get the code. well i did that, and turned the car to on and the check engine light flashed steadily, and i could hear the fan start up and a weird knocking noise. but no code. did i miss something?

Lightbulb

looks like it was the gas cap or maybe a loose wire... i tightened the cap and checked all the wires and hoses, unplugged the battery and no CE light yet.
but im still curious about pulling the code!

as far as i know, the only way to pull codes from an obdII car is with a scanner.

Good job searching Boomer but bender is right, that trick only works on OBDI cars -- so pre-97 or so.

Assuming "BoomerRS" means you have some year of 2.5RS, you need to visit the dealer to get the CE code unless you happen to know someone with an OBDII scanner, preferably the Subaru one.

Unhappy

yup, colin i have a 98RS. that would explain the light show. it sucks that we cant get a code ourselves. well if it comes back on, im heading to the dealer then. how much are the scan tools? i imagine big bucks, although i think you can get ones for fords and chevys for under $100 from summit. we are prob out of luck though.

it sounds like you hooked up the d check
connectors--2 green connectors--when plugged
in the computer will cycle all the components
to check there operation--normal--.

tough to pull codes without the proper tool

A steady flash of the check engine light is the all clear signal. If it didn't flash at all or flashed some other pattern then you may have a problem.

Like M.S.P.T. said you connected two of the ECU check connectors. There should also be two (male/female) black connectors as well. When these connectors are connected the ECU will run through a series of tests to make sure every thing is ok. By just connecting the green connectors, not all systems may have been checked. Which might explain why you got an all clear even though you had a check engine light. The other possibility is that the check engine light was inadvertent.

Also, by connecting those connectors its a good chance you did an ECU reset. This might explain some of the noises you heard. Was the engine running when you heard the knocking noise? Did it sound like engine knock?

For a little more insight on this go to MRT's web site. At the home page click on "Technical Tips", followed by "How to Tips", then "How to re-set your ECU unit".

nah, the engine wasnt running... and it sounded more like a clicking. it was coming from the engine, from what i could tell from inside the car. i pulled them apart... i didnt know what i was doing.
the other explanation for the light was the gas cap or loose wire, which i might have fixed.
i saw one black connector, but not 2. i will look later. should the engine be running when i connect the green or black connectors?
