Default What I learned about Exhaust Bylaw

When i was at Powerrama this weekend i ended up talking the the Edm police and asked them about the bylaw for exhaust systems.

What the law states if you increase the size of your tip larger than stock you can be ticketed, no matter how loud it is. However, the particular cop i was talking to said he wouldnt pull over a car if it wasnt distracting (really loud). Mellon shooters, be on the look out. By the way, they are talking like 4 inch tips.

As for how loud is too loud, well there isnt no set limit, just if it distracting to other drivers, or just noticably too loud. For testing, they told me that anything that is louder than stock is not legal. How they test i am not sure.

So, Krakka99 when i run into some more cash here i will buy that perrin catback from ya, thx for your quick reply and all, i have been busy this weekend.

On another note, i got my defi BF boost gauge installed with the control unit and i must say it was definately worth the money. The gauges look soooo sweet and operate very smooth with no jerking around. When the gauge turns on it reads 0 and i am boosting bout 14 psi. The peak, warning, and record options are nice too, real helpful for short sprints and then checking your stuff out.

Anywho, i am out.

see what I dont get is what the heck does the size of the tip have to do with anything. You can have a 2" exhaust and a 4" tip (don't ask me why this is just hypothetical) and the tip does nothing for sound or anything.

Actually, a 2" pipe that is flared to 3" will act like a trumpet & nearly double the sound. We had 3" pipe w/ a 4" trumpet on the race car & were told not to come back to the track until our car was quieter. All we did was cut off the trumpets at the track & none of the officials complained. Think of Harley exhausts - they are way louder whe the go from small to big than when the are straight-cut pipes. I think that is the reasoning for it. I don't know. It's dumb anyhow.

The guy at the exhaust shop I was at yesterday said that they can't keep the resonators in stock - they are going so fast. I thought that was funny.

Each province governs thier own Highway Traffic Act or Road Saftey Administration. Metting a Canadian mandate means a vehcile will comply in all provinces & territories.

Each province has their own laws in regards to the highway and traffic acts. So No they can't ticket you.

This is an Alberta law. You can find it on the Queen's Printer website for Alberta... nope it's not there anymore... anyway, from 2003:

Quote:
RSA 1980 cH-7 s45
Mufflers
46(1) A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine
shall be equipped with an exhaust muffler consisting of a series of
pipes or chambers which ensures that the exhaust gases from the
engine are cooled and expelled without excessive noise and without
the emission of any flame or sparks.
(2) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by
an internal combustion engine when the muffler with which the
vehicle is equipped is cut out or disconnected from the engine.
(3) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by
an internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler from which
has been removed a baffle-plate or other part.
(4) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by
an internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler, the exhaust
outlet of which has been opened or widened.
(5) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by
an internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler or exhaust
system to which is attached any device which increases the noise of
the expulsion of the gases from the engine or allows a flame to be
ignited from the exhaust system.
edit: Highway Traffic Act from Alberta

in bc if your car came stock with it you have to have it... such as cat's, seatbelts etc...

although there are no emission tests in bc other than vancouver so you can punch your cat and they will never know.

In the Edmonton Journal there was an article talking about cracking down on loud vehicles and motorcycles on Whyte Ave. As it happens, they mentioned that vehicles should not be louder than 82 dB and motorcyles 84 dB. Do not ask me how they determine the decibel level as the measurement methodology was not discussed in the article. The article interviewed one cop who said that people who were being sensible such as shifting at low RPM's, etc. would not necessarily get ticketed, even if their car was on the louder side. The cop also said that it was basically his discretion as to what he considered too loud. He seemed reasonable about it but you never know what cop you'll get.

Basically, they are on the lookout for extermely loud exhausts or audio systems, illegal tint, illegal headlight/signal light colours (blue), broken lights and things that make it more difficult to see a license plate. So, heads up when cruisin' Whyte Ave these days.

I'd say chances are slim that you're driving a honda civic HB circa ealry 90's if you're a drug dealer - maybe if you are on some wild drugs... but not dealer

lol
