Arrow Niagara>Sarnia Ontario

Hey all,

I'm going to be travelling thru this corridor to a wedding in Lansing this summer. I've never been thru this part of Ontario and was just wondering if there's anywhere we should definately check out along the way(sites, cheaper gas etc) or speed traps/typical undercovers vehicles we should be aware of.

I know detectors are against the law in Ontario but i'm guessing VG2 pretty much takes care of that end. Nevertheless any non-sarcastic-laden advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Are you sticking to the QEW, 403, 401, 402 route? or do you want to find some good back roads?

If your staying on the expressways most people drive at about 75mph (120kmph). The speed limit is 62mph (100kmph). Stick with the flow and you shouldn't get a ticket. The police use Crown Vics and occasionally Impala's, usually white, but sometimes black with "hidden" graphics that you can only see in certain light conditions.

As for sites: the only big major tourist attraction along this route is Niagara Falls. What sort of things are you into (natural areas, history, amusement parks, good food)?

Not really. I think they are at VG3 now. My past 2 detectors had VG2 but I got nailed both times

Well we're planning on sticking to the 4's but if there was something interesting to see a little ways off them, then we'd probably check it out.

So is the hidden graphics thing an Ontario law that they have to be marked but this is their stealth answer to it?

I think good food would be the most relevant for this particular trip, but being aware of other things would be great for a future trip.

Thanks for all your tips so far Howl!

Yuck, ok. Were you able to hide it in time or did they destroy it in front of you and fine you?

I read through the listings for the towns/cities along the 4's on speedtraps.org and there wasn't much listed. I'll check it out in early July before our trip to see what's new.

I was able to hide it both times but they wanted to tow me downtown to take apart the car b/c they knew..

I handed it over with a $165 fine.

speedtraps.org has nothing. The domain is 4 sale.

Best thing about cop cars here is that the regular marked vehicles are always mainly white. So if you see a white Crown Vic or a white Impala, you slow down until you can positively ID it. I don't often come across an unmarked car doing traffic duty.

In my experience, speed enforcement on the highways here is lighter than in the US. If you drive from Fort Erie to Sarnia without seeing a single cruiser that wouldn't be unusual. If I had to suggest particular areas to keep an eye out while passing through, however, I would say the QEW in the Niagara area, the 403 around Brantford, and the 401/402 between London and Strathroy. Howl is right on with the average speed... the unofficial speed limit is 120 km/h and 100 km/h on two-lanes. If you have time to spare, consider Highway 3 as a more scenic alternate route between Fort Erie and the London area.

There are some worthwhile places to visit in this part of Ontario but generally they're a ways off the 400-series highways. If you're into wine, Niagara is one of Ontario's wine regions and has a lot of vineyards with tours, tasting, stores, etc. http://www.ontariotravel.net has good info and suggestions.

There are some unmarked cars, usually white Crown Vic's or Impala's. The stealth cars are more common, at least around Niagara/Hamilton. They are black Crown Vic's, but at night the lettering is reflective (also visable up close in daylight hours).

Food. Let's see. My favorite burger place is Lick's, which isn't too far off the highway in Burlington
MAP (exit QEW at Fairview Street, just over the Skyway bridge, when you get back on go north on Brant Ave to QEW).
