Default Shuttering Car & CEL Flash

Hello:

I went to start my car today. It started fine, but it began shaking quite violently when I began to drive it. THe check engine light began to FLASH after about 100 meters so I pulled the car into an empty parking lot. When I turned off the car and restarted it, the problem persisted (both in forward and reverse and in park). When I reved the engine in park the shaking was not there. When I took my foot off the accelerator and let the engine idol in park it would shake in spurts for about a couple of seconds each spurt with a couple of second breaks in between.

I called a more knowledgable friend and he suggested that there may be water in my gas (while i filled it up at a sketchy gas station recently, that was over 5 days ago). He told me to let the car warm up and then fill my (3/4 empty gas tank) with fresh gas. After the car warmed up, the check engine light remained on, but solid. So, I drove it to the gas station adn filled it up and was able to successfully drive the car home.

We also got drenched with very heavy rain all day today and my car was parked outside.

I have been told that this may be due to the plugs as well. My car has 50,000KM on it and I have never changed the plugs. If this may be the root of the problem, would you change them at the dealer?

Those are the clues....

Any suggestions of what happened and/or what I should do? The car is 3 yrs old now and out of some aspects of warranty. Shoudl I take it to my local Subaru dealer tomorrow and get them to inspect why the check engine light illuminated?

Thanks

A flashing cel is standared of a mis fire. You already no that though. Check your plugs. They should be light tan/grey. The electrodes my be shot. Plugs do wear out. They get very thin where they spark. This leads to them having the wrong gap(should be .44in) or even breaking apart. If the plugs are fine, could be somthing more serious. Was is starting to over heat? If so you blew a head gasket. If your powertrain is still in warranty you have nothing to worry about. Bring it in.

Check you spark plug wires first. The nipples on the coil pack can get corroded and cause the miss fire. It's happen to me. If they are. Clean them off with some steel wool or a scotchbrite pad and get some dielectric compound to them to keep them from corroding.

The same thing happened to me, It rained all day yesterday, I didn't drive it all day, I went to go hang out with some buddies and I turned the key on my 05 2.5R/S and the same thing happened. Violent shaking, check engine light blinking. I didn't try driving it because this is the third time it has happened since I've had the car (about a year), and I knew I wouldn't have much of any power behind it. I will have to check out the plug wires later, and I will report back. I tried it this morning, and all seems well, so I would assume it's something to do with water (it's not raining today). I'm not a car guy (I try to learn), so what exactly am i looking for, and where? Pics would be great. Thanks in advance.

Update: I haven't been able to get it checked out, because I don't have $300, but it happened again this morning after it rained pretty bad last night. I left my hood open with the sun shining on it for about a half hour this morning, and it's fine again. The dealership thought it might have been a crack in the ignition coil, but if this is the case, would it be able to dry out that quickly? I'm hoping that this means it's probably just spark plugs or wires.

If you don't have a local auto parts store that reads codes for free, post in a regional forum and see if someone near you does. I'd read your code(s), but I don't think you'd want to make the trip.

autozone does, but they can't pull codes. They said they can only read it if the CEL light is on when I get there. You know anywhere that can pull a code that's not on anymore?
