Default 96 Legacy GT Head Gas. Blow!

Hi all. I got a 96 Legacy GT 6 months ago paid $10,000 for it from a Subaru dealer. One month after the warrenty was gone the car over heated(had the car for 4 months) got the thoermostat changed at the dealer about $350. One month later the car over heats again. I bring it back to the dealer they say the heads are cracked! I was gonna get a Ej20 single turbo and the link on-line but no one is sure if it will fit. I read the specs page and it helped alot but still not sure. So..I think i am gonna just get a new block from Subaru and have a diffenent dealer do about $2800. Anyone live near Phila want to help me out? Or just give me good ideas please Thanks

Hmm.. that's an awful lot for a '96. I bought my '97 Legacy L for $5,000. Its no GT but there have not been any problems whatsoever. Have you tried using the lemon law?

wow that sucks, the dealer said the heads are cracked? Then just get new heads. or just head, since it would be weird for both to crack.
When it overheated did it spew everywhere? My 96 GT says its over heating when its slightly low on coolant, because the sensor will only touch hot steam.

p.s. the ej20 will fit just fine, we have members with those in thier Legacies

Thanks yea i got shafted. I loved it when i got it but i think they sold it to me this way. The lemon law only covers new cars, i think. I fiq this is the time to get something a little faster in it. The car it self is in Great Shape. The dealer the i got it from ofered me $3,000 for it. So they can sell it again. Can someone who had a ej20 put in post how much it cost. I found a e j 20 $1250 i think, about that much. on e-bay and the link is a $1000 plus labor. Anyone know how to do it a little cheaper?

Where are you in the philly area. I live in Media if you know where that is and I have a small part time shop off of McDade Blvd. Me and my buddy do it as a side job. I just bought a 97 2.5 GT and I think I need a HG too lol. If you want I can get prices together for ya. We are not a big shop be we stand behind what we do and we do it for a good price.

I concur: 10k is a lot for a 96 GT (I just sold my 96 GT Wagon for less than half that) and $350 seem way too much for a thermostat.

The 96 EJ25 is not especially troublesome - at least they don't get the dreaded cylinder slap. The AT in that year/model, however has problems. You should swap out both AT and engine, which you'd likely have to do anyway if you went with a EJ20.

Whatever you get, make sure to budget for the ECU and the turbo/intercooler. Those are not always included in those eBay offerings.
