Post Look! Twin Engine Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone remember a while back I was talking about a twin engine golf, well in the July issue of REVS they had a small item on it and the car itself can be seen at

www.kippertie.com/dub2k.html

if you goto the download link you can see some in car footage of it doing the 1/4 mile drag
The spec is very impresive it is, wait for it 2xVR6 engine's one is 2.8 the other is 2.9 and they are both turbo'ed! giving a total output of 800bhp which equates to a 1/4 mile time of 11.48secs and 0-60mph of just over 3secs, the gearing on the car would theoreticly give a top speed of 200mph!
The beast was created by Ian Birch of Dubsport in the UK

If you look at the footage you can see that the other car he is dragging with makes a better start and he then catches it and overtakes it, I think that the times would be alot quicker if he had gone for it straight away, but acording to the mag he had only finished the car the night before so he probably didn't want to blow it on it's first outing.

Thumbs up

speaking of twin engine anyone else see the dual engine M.Benz A-model (the super tiny econo box only avaliable in everywhere but here). It small 1 liter or so engines that were tuned, one in the front and one in the back. I forget numbers and exact facts.. was a while ago. But i do remember 1/4 mile and 0-60 to be very impresive. The power to weight ratio was very nice.

Hey that's kind of like the Mosler company and their twin engine Cadillac. power to all the wheels and two big V8's under the hood and trunk. Now just think about stopping for gas?

Just to let you know - Ian's car, which we're actually producing a full length video about, was running only 7psi of boost on each engine to acheive the 12 second quarter. The engines at that time were standard with lowered compression and a small t3 turbo each actual total output was about 600bhp. A couple of weeks ago at Santa Pod he ran a 10.2 quarter, still at relatively low boost, but with a t4 turbo on the rear engine. (We grenaded an engine doing a high speed test at Bruntingthorpe due to a management problem! Hence the rebuild)

Next up are race spec bottom ends for each engine, hybrid t4 based turbos and weber alpha injection to replace the digifant g60 management currently running the show. Should be very impressive!

I'll be posting a couple more video downloads to our site, www.kippertie.com soon, and keep your eyes peeled for the video later this year. Ian's going for record 0-60 0-60-0, 0-100-0 times and top speed records too,

Cheers,

Somewhere around '90 or '91 a twin engine Suzuki Swift GT won a class at the Pikes Peak hillclimb. 2 1.3l 4 cyl engines did really well for them.

Also, somewhere I have a Car & Driver or Motor Trend from the early 80's where they did 2 stock 68hp civic engines in a Civic. For only 136HP, their claims were 5.5sec 0-60 and a good 1/4 mile time. But I can't find the exact article now.

um call me old fashioned but 600 - 800 bhp and only running 12's and 11's is rather pathetic. I know that sounds harsh, and it might be taken as an insult but I assure you its not. Anybody that would go through the problems of putting two engines in one car is trying to accomplish something different. Congrats on that!

I really dont know what the goals were when starting that project. But if was to make a demonic fast car..well I dont think that 11 second quarters will do it. I had a 74 trans am with 500 HP that ran 11's..

oh well just my drop in the bucket.

I think the thing to remember is that this is not an out and out drag car. (Although the latest time is a 10.2 which is pretty quick!)
As well as pulling respectable quarters, this machine corners like a track car, and stops amazingly too. Due to some cunning traction control/ launch control / ABS, (I don't need to tell you guys about four wheel drive!) it'll do it all in the rain too, and to cap it all, it'll run on one engine on ordinary streets and return a practical fuel consumption! Not typical characteristics for a 10.9 bracket racer... or a circuit racer/hill climb car...
Admittedly being jack of all trades does mean being master of none, but this car makes a damn good stab at it!

Is it possible for you guys to run only one engine at a time, like on the twin engine Mercedes A-Class? Also, do you turn down the boost when you run it on the street? If you do, how much hp does it make in "street trim", I guess you'd call it?

Thanks
Mike
