Angry Are you Grinding 5th????

I'm approaching 2000mi on my car so it's still fairly new.

I can't seem to shift into 5th without it grinding, even with the clutch pedal fully depressed. Gears 1-4 work just fine, and pedal pressure and freeplay are within specs. I already bled the system and that didn't change anything. It just seems that 5th likes the clutch to be fully disengaged more than the other gears. Could 5th be using a weak synchro as compared to 1-4? Anyone else have this problem? My next step is to adjust the clutch master by lengthening the actuator rod. I'm sure this may fix it, but it still bugs me that 1-4 work fine and 5th doesn't. This really leads me to believe it's something with the trans as opposed to the clutch.

As a matter of fact yes. It didn't start right away, but I have to pause with the clutch in for a second before I comlete the shift to fifth (final shove foreward) or I will get a little grind. I pause no grind. Kind of like having a slow synchro. i took it to the dealer last week, and they gave me no hassle and ordered my part (new 5th synshro) and it is waiting for me to bring the car in. I have yet to go in and get it as I HAD to have the car to go to Rallispec to last saturday so I could get my catback N1. I would have done it this week except I have to have my wisdom teeth pulled and I didn't know when the oppointment would come (stupid insurance). As soon as I know when my oppointment will be I can call them and get it taken care of. I can't wait to see what the rental car will be <evil grin>.

It is a defect and they will fix it without a problem. Take it in.

Thanks. At least I know I'm not the only one with this problem. If I pause, I get the same results, it will go in. If I shift too quickly, it crunches. Sounds like I'll be making a trip to the dealer.

You're not the only one by a long shot, and it's just MY00. You might have some luck searching for earlier discussions... but as I recall it was a lot like a bad batch of transmissions. Originally they were all being swapped out as a unit but then FHI figured out what specifically was wrong and now dealers should be fixing that part.

Sorry, but I didn't bookmark the discussions. It doesn't happen to MY99...

Here, I'll help you guys out.

The best discussion remaining is here: http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum1/HTML/005999.html

Unfortunately there's a dead link in there that I'm pretty sure had the REAL detailed info about exactly what the problem is. Guess we can't keep every message.

Here's another snippet: http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum1/HTML/009339.html

Edit: oh, and some 99's had the problem too.

I have a 99 and my car didn't start doing it until 7,000miles. Now i have 18,000 on her and the dealer just ordered my parts and hopfully they'll be in in a week or so they are also doing 3rd and 4th for me so that's all you need to tell them just go down and they should fix it if not try a good dealer.

I have a 99 at it's been doing this since about 15k miles. It got much worse when I switched to synthetic transmission oil (but all the other gears are better). Now I've gotten into the habit of shifting out of fourth into neutral, releasing the clutch, pressing the clutch back in and shifting into 5th. It never grinds when I do that, but it's a bit annoying (though I don't really notice I'm doing it anymore).

I would take it to the dealership but somehow I think that they might not fix it under warranty because of the synthetic tranny oil (either that or the turbo ).

My car is currently at the dealer for this problem to be fixed.

Since it was new 5th was always a delicate shift and third was very notchy as well.

I figured it would do one of two things, either break-in, or break. The latter was the ticket. My car behaved well at speeds below 45-50, but when things were up to temp at highway speeds the 5th gear synchro was trash. The pedal feel was lame from the beginning and got worse as things got up to temp. Double de-clutching solved the grinding problem, but I shouldnt have to drive a car in this fashion.

After two months of waiting for parts they have had my car for a lil over a week and are waiting for more parts... Third gear started getting worse so I hope its being fixed as well.

The main problem is the heat. The rubber hose gets subjected to alot of heat (especially when main hood scoop is removed).
The rubber hose swells when the pedal is pushed in and the clutch doesn't fully release. In the lower gears this isnt such a big deal since they are closely spaced.
However 5th gear is an "overdrive" gear and its not on the same shaft as gears 1-4 thus straining the synchro during the 5th gear upshift.

After they get done with whatever they are going to fix, I am going to upgrade to a stainless clutch line with a little extra heat shielding to be safe

My 98 does it too. I bought it used so dont know how long it has. at least 30k thats for sure. Had 19k when I bought it has 48k now. I guess I will go in to get it fixed soon. Only have a couple thousand miles left to do so. I still love my car though, even if I do have to hold the clutch for a bit to get fifth.

Will the SMC stainless clutch line fix this problem, or least help? I just got new 2nd and 3rd gear synchros last week, but still have a rare grind from 4th to 5th or back down.

Most of the time, it seems that the shift gate "slams to door shut" on you and locks you out of 3rd or 5th, and then you grind when you let out the clutch with it not being properly in gear.

I am not very happy with the tranny, but the shop foreman at the suby dealer ownes www.subysports.com and says that a SYMS shifter fixed the problem in his car. I gave him one of my PVC cold air intakes for the labor to install the SYMS, but don't have the $385 for the shifter yet. I just spent $600 on parts to build aluminum intakes instead

Subaru should issue a recall

I grind 2nd sometimes, and it's starting to worry me.

I double clutch and make the 1 to 2 shift just like every other gear and still gring 2nd at times.

It's usually after reving hard in 1st and shifting higher than 4000.

I dont' know gearboxes that well. Could it be a bad syncro ?
