Default So none of my co workers have heard of Walter Mitty??

I made a Walter Mitty comment today and they looked at me like I was crazy. Who's he?

Did you go to High School? (Stupid question, considering some act like they havn't gotten to High School yet).

Please tell me OT would understand if I referred to some one as a Walter Mitty???

I remember that short story from school ... they probably don't teach it anymore because its too Eurocentric or too militaristic or too hard to read or something ...

I read it in english in high school, but I totally forget what it was about. Was it that one about the guy who got rejected a lot, or the one about the guy that was born in the wrong time... or... I don't know, all the short stories / poems mix together, but I know we read that one.

The only reason I knew was because of the Walter Mitty Historics.... the classic races they hold at Road Atlanta each year. So.... I hit google to find out who Walter Mitty was

Thanks, Brad. I work in educational publishing so I see some of these absurdities from the inside.

It's basically about a guy with a boring life who is always daydreaming about being a fighter pilot or whatever.

You just made me think of a cartoon from when I was a kid about a boy that was always daydreaming....I can picture it in my head but can't think of the name.

I think it's more of an age thing Rick. It's also a literacy thing. I'm convinced that most ppl under 25 don't ever pick up a book unless they have to, and sometimes not even then.

Ehhh.... I don't know if I would go that far. I read more than most people I know, but I have absolutely no interest in fictional short stories which would include the Walter Mitty thing. Most of my reading is history books either about medieval European history, or the history of NC. I never could get into reading as entertainment..... only for knowledge.

That's why I said most, not all. I'm sure there's a few who read.

"No one holds his brandy like you, Mitty."

S'bout all I can remember. It's been a good 20 years since I read those.
