Default Two EJ25 DOHC questions ('98 RS)

Looking at buying a '98 RS, and have a couple of questions.

The owner said his mechanic said the head gaskets will eventually need to be replaced, but there are no leaks as of now.

How much can I expect this to cost? Will it be cheaper if I do it preemptively? Is it something I can do myself?

Furthermore, he says the car burns a little oil, but not enough to need to fill between oil changes. He states this is normal. Is it?

Thanks!

A little oil burning is OK.
The HGs are prone to failure. No need to do it until it fails, just don't drive around with the engine overheating or it will warp. There is a replacement that works a lot better. Should cost between $1 and 2K, depends on who does it. Parts are only $150 or so.

My '98 just turned 90K and the only things I've had to replace (more like the dealership, as I don't have the ability to lose my main car for extended times) was the front crank seal.

I'm sure if you take care of the car it will be fine. But I'm no expert on the matter.

In the three years of owning my 98 RS, including rallycrosses and several rallies worth of lead car driving, I've had to the following work on the car:

ecu replacement - throwing bogus CELs (under warranty)
D-side head gasket failure
-replaced timing belt at the same time
Timing Belt tensioner
-replace front crank seal at the same time

Have also done brake pads on all four corners, several air filters, and a fuel filter.

Why bother with a high end stereo? You can't hear it over the gravel noise!
