Default Oxygen sensor

Hi !
Im a little confused about the oxygen sensor, seems like there are 2 in the forester the "front" and the "rear", when subaru did a recall on the 2001 forester O2 sensor, which one did they recall ? My dealer says they replaced the oxygen sensor (they did not say which one) and I want to chack if they actually replaced it or not.
Also is there a way to check the functionality of the sensors with a multimeter ?
Thanks !
Ryan

I think that your sensors are okay as long as your check engine light isn't on since they are constantly monitored. If you happen to know someone with an OBD-II reader, especially one with "I/M Monitors" (Inspection/Maintenance) you can have them check their status to make sure they are ready.

I have such a reader, if you want to take a short drive to Centreville I would be more than happy to check your car out with the reader, only takes a minute.

My CEL light came on and reset itself so I know there is an intermittent problem, the question is did the dealer fix it.
I used to be in the DC area, I just relocated to Dallas TX so I dont know anyone here.
Thanks for the info

The front sensor has input in how the car runs (A/F mixture) the rear one is just telling how the cat is working but has no bearing on the performance of the motor. I had a front one go bad and eventually throw a CEL, my car ran crappy and my MPG's went way down too.

OK...this is an old post ..BUT....I never knew that the 01 Forester had a recall on the O2 sensor.

I bring this up because I just threw a CEL and it points to the O2 sensor. Can I get it replaced at a Subaru dealer under a recall?

OBE.............I think I have answered my question.

Perhaps WXW-80 dated 01/2001 will provide what I need when I go and deal with the Suby dealer.

Will let you know how it goes.

If you PM me the last 8 digits of your VIN number, I can tell you if the recall applies or is open on your vehidle (it may have already been done.)

If it was already done you will have to pay for the sensor (unless it is within 1 year)

Also have the dealership check and see if the ecm is eligible for a reflash (covered 8/80k)

Angry How can I check if my car applies for recalls?

I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find out how I can check to see if any of the Forester recalls apply to my car. Any help on this one?

Feeling a bit duped, since a week after I bought my '01 Forester S Auto and after $800 worth of repairs to fix problems not visible on purchase, the check engine light came on and I'm suspecting an O2 sensor issue (gas mileage is barely 14MPG!?!). Hoping that some of the recalls apply, since I'm really having problems with this car. So far (this is after 2 days of driving it):

Leaking radiator
Brakes replaced (they were at less than 10%)
Head Gasket leaking
Car noticeably shaking/vibrating at idle
Jerky shifting between first & second
TONS of wind noise from bad seals
CV joint issue
Dome light dysfunctional
Check Engine Light just popped up
Most troubling - EXTREMELY BAD GAS MILEAGE - 12-14MPG

Is this normal? Ugh - I just got this car and already it's been in the shop more than I've driven it Help!

You can take your car to an auto parts store and get the exact CEL codes pulled, and then you can be certain whether or not it's an O2 sensor issue. If you are getting serious shaking/vibration you may have other issues, possibly serious. If your head gaskets are leaking, you are on track for some more expensive repairs that will need to be performed soon.

If you got the car from a dealer it may be worth trying to take it back and get a different car. With leaking fluids you may not even pass a safety inspection if your state requires one.

wow, that kind of ****ty mileage is definitely not normal! Did you pull the CEL code yet?

The wind noise and the jerky 1-2 shifts are somewhat common, but it sounds like your Forester has been abused or not properly maintained with this many problems. How many miles on it?

Not quite 90, thinking it was definately poorly maintained. I'd heard that most of the problems I've been having (head gasket, Check Engine Light, O2 sensors, etc) were plaguing the early 00's Foresters (didn't they do a recall based on the leaky heads, wheel bearings, etc as well as the O2 sensor?) - any idea on how to find out whether or not I qualify for the sensor recall?

Response to dealer questions - I bought my car from an independent dealer (not Subaru), so not sure how repairs work in that case - if I qualify for the recalled sensor, I'll have to have a Subaru dealer replace, correct? Arg, never this many problems with a car before.
