Thumbs up if you have coilovers, go get your car balanced

i took my car to get aligned and balanced yesterday. WOW. before I went in, I had just installed a new set of yoko avs-sports, and liked the tires. nothing earth shakingly different fromt past tire setups. right now i have GAB Rev II's, SPO 21.7mm rear sway bar & links, 17x7 speedline preo-r's w/ yoko 215/45/17 avs-sports, sti rear strut tower bar, jc front strut bar(not installed at the moment), adjustable camber plated in front, not adjustable in the rear.
here are the settings I asked for.
front toe = -1/16
front camber = -2
castor = even
rear toe = -1.5
rear camber = -1.5

once again. WOW. I never thought the car could handle THIS well. It is unreal. the yoko's ROCK, and I recommend them to EVERYONE. After the work was done, i am able to take turns 20-30 mph faster than hours before. It is unbelievable how much a difference the balancing and alignment did. If you havent done this yet, and you have coilovers, you must do it. $200, and worth every penny. In fact, if it had cost $400, it is still worth it.

Question

Castor = even? It may well be even between the front tires but it should have a number.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that you couldn't adjust the castor without any external components as it is actually a change in the geometry of the suspension components.

Most camber plates allow castor to be adjusted.

You did not include the final corner weights...
What f/r ratio did you get?
what diagonal ratio it ended with?

Question

Like Mr. Gasket asked, what did you get the final weight distribution to? Alignment specs are fine but I really what to know how the car is balanced, since you're the fist one I've seen post about having your car balanced (I'm assuming you mean corner weighed).

Sorry guys, I totally spaced the most important #'s. And I left the stuff at home. I will post the numbers tonight. In general, the front had about 56% of the weight, rear (duh) about 44%. Right side had 49% while, you guessed it, the left side had 51% of the weight.

I will post the results tonight. I cant believe I forgot to put those up.

Bluesaint.

Krauss racing in Catro Valley. $200, and well worth it. WHat they do is put the car on a scale at each corner. From there, they get each corner weight, the diagonal weights and %'s, front and rear weight and %'s. then they raise or lower the coils to 'balance' the car(they gerneraly only do it diagonally, the cross weight is more important in regards to the way the car reacts in a turn. weight in general shifts diagonally from front to rear). my car needed the rtfront, and lftrear lowered to balance it out. the car was very close, but still needed tweeking. Right now I could use more weight in the rtrear, so I am planning on relocating the battery to that location. That should make the car VERY balanced. Heck, the car is amazing right now. I will proly not change a stinkin thing in the future. I can't imagine thecastor kit making any big difference at this point. the car is SO fast in a turn, and is literally glued to the ground. I LOVE IT!

josh

Keep the questions coming if you have em.

Oh yeah, Colin, the castor $ was 35. Not sure if degrees or what again.

When I was looking at the TEINs a while back I asked and nobody had done it yet even though I had seen it done on SCC project cars before. At least now I know that it really does have some benefit to doing it. I guess I will have to find a shop in Rochester when I go home to get it done.

before alignment: Camber=0.8 Caster=3.5 Toe=0.95

Right Front: Camber=-0.7 Caster=3.2 Toe=0.00
before alignment: Camber=0.7 Caster=3.2 Toe=0.04

Question

If you typed that right you don't have nearly enough camber on either front tire, but especially on the left. -.2 isn't going to cut it with a strut suspension because the outside tire will go to positive camber during hard cornering.

Josh, do you have the anti-lift kit too? Because if you have 3.5 castor that's about identical to bluesaint's. And the ALK is supposed to add another .5 degree of static castor...

if they set your camber at -.2, then they have there head up there ass. you will want at least the -1.5 you can get from the stock adjustment bolt. and whats up with the uneven cross castor? mine was = to 0 after my alignment. Heck, the camber should be even on both sides. so should the toe.

It depends on many things what settings to get. since you are using stock pillows, then i would ask for as much camber as you can get in front and rear, 1/16th of toe out in front, i went for about an -1.5 degrees toe in in the rear(I will need to confirm that). that makes the car a bit twitchy, and follows lined roads sometimes. no biggie to me tho. You alsoi need to decide how much you want to lower the car. Mine measure 24.5" on the right, and 24.75" on the left, measuring from the center of the rim to the lip of the fender. You might be able to run this hieght, but you also have 7.5" wide rims, and I know if you go to low you will rub. so be careful.

I would go get it done bluesaint. it was a real piece of mind for me.

hope this helps.

do a search on yahoo for krauss racing in castro valley. should get two listings.

it is over by Fremont

measure your current height. if it is close and you are not rubbing now then you should be cool.
