Default busted for exhaust

Just a few days ago I finally got stopped for my exhaust in Irvine. I was actually able to drive around for six months with my apex gt-spec but only a couple weeks after I added a pde downpipe. So now I'm looking to go for silent power but I need to understand a couple things first if you guys could help.

It's a correctable infraction: VC 27151 (a) - Modified Exhaust
My ticket says I have to visit the Harbor justice center. So does that mean I get it written off there or will I later be sent to the state ref? What kind of inspection will I get? visual/sniffer/noise??

I don't know if this will help, but I just came across this bit of info...it's a Q&A for CHP officers to help in determining who is in violation of the law and who isn't. VERY informative.

I got the same violation. All I am doing is putting my stock muffler on, leaving DP and UP in, and then going to get it signed off. The CHP also told me I had to go to the state ref but I am not going to go. I am just going to get it signed off and pay the 10 bucks.

Is there a chance you might not have to travel too far?

Well my friends dad is a SDPD and I talk to him about all my tickets. He told me all I had to do was change the muffler?

How were you guys told to go to the State Ref? I am curious. Cuase CHP just told me the number....no documentation or anything...so I dont know.

JungDragon...sorry to steal the thread....but anyways I think you just have to change your muffler and your are safe. Thats what I was told anyways though.

Well, I haven't been sent to the ref (never had anything to hide when pulled over), but many people have whined about doing this rigorous process of removing mods such as FMIC's, modifications that are near permanent and other things that I am sure they had wished they could of avoided doing. I would see if you can talk to any of these people that have been through it and find out what you are required to do. I know wrx grl just went through this and passed easily. But honestly I am not sure it is as easy as it sounds.

Exhaust noise violations are very different than emissions violations. Please don't confuse the two.

Noise violations are easy to get signed off. You don't even have to put your cats back in 'n stuff, as long as your car is quiet enough.

Emissions tickets suck. Be very nice to the officer so you don't get one. You may have to go the smog ref on a ticket along those lines...

Charlie is right, I didn't even notice the code on Jungdragons violation was for noise:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27151.htm

I thought you meant that they told you to go to the ref. Going to the ref is unnecessary in your case. Worst case scenario: You can just pay the fee and show the CHP station that you put on the stock exhaust if they need to see that and then just put your aftermarket one back on afterwards. But only go to the CHP station to show them if they require it. For that violation there is no need for a ref, however in lilWRXer760's case he might have to go if they asked him to.

The Ref can do the dB test for a noisy exhaust ticket - may be what me means about going to the Ref. Of course, you only go to prove you exhaust meets the limits if it does meet the limits. Otherwise, you swap and go.

Thanks for the for the help guys. That's what my confusion was about. I didn't know if I needed to visit the state ref or just get my ticket signed off. Since my ticket was for noise, I suppose I can leave the pde downpipe on and just replace the stock catback.
My question now is that I just find a police station to get the ticket written off, then visit the justice center and give them the documentation by the deadline? Sorry, I've never had to do any of this stuff before so it's all new to me

Yeah, but if you go to the ref for a db test and they notice cats are not on (I believe he has a pde dp) then there's a bigger chance he is in for a bigger beating. I wouldn't go unless he has too. He could probably get away with it, I believe wrx grl did. But if I were him (Jungdragon) I would avoid going.

Jungdragon-I am not a 100% sure on that. I haven't been in that situation before. That does sound like the plan though.

Depends on the violation. If he got dinged for having a loud exhaust (exceeding dB levels), he'll have to go to the Ref to get it tested, unless he wants to swap to stock parts and claim stock to the police. CHP would sign off on something like that, if they are able. Google the violation and see what the code means.

Do a search for "exhaust ticket" and you'll find all the info you need spelled out in plain English. Many people have been through this before.

Does six weeks sound about right for how long I have to fix this? I can't tell if the deadline is 5/16/04 or 6/16/04.

To let you guy's know. I got a ticket about 2 months ago for my Blitz Nur Spec on my S13. It ran a 99.0dB w/silencer in. So I had to go back to stock and then get it tested again, ran a 86.4dB.

I went to CHP, they told me since I passed at the ref. I was good to go, just had to go by the courthouse and pay the clerk. I was thinking... 20 bucks right?

WRONG!... The officer checked off the box that says, "Non-correctable" and now I owe $111 even though I swapped everything back to stock. It's messed up. Check out what the officer checked you off as... you might be screwed also.

the officer checked "yes" for correctable and also told me that it was a $10 fix-it ticket. So I have six weeks to do this right? His handwriting wasn't very clear on the deadline.

well it just seems to get more confusing. Some people have said in the past that the law was changed to all modified exhaust tickets(27151) being non-correctable. One person had their correctable ticket changed to non-correctable by mail because of this. This was waaay back in october!
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ighlight=27151
Now I really don't know what to expect

I'd have to check on this to be sure, but I think if it's non-correctable you don't have to correct the problem. Just pay the fine.

That's how it used to be for tint violations. If they marked correctable, it was $10 and you had to take the tint off. If it wasn't marked correctable, the fine was $150, but you didn't have to remove the tint.
