Yeah, that's about right.

Post The next epic Group Buy - Window Tint!

OK, this is mostly directed at other WRX Wagon owners, but here goes...

Who would be interested in a Group Buy on window tinting? We should be able to get a nice discount because the tint shop can cut all our film at once. To do this, all orders would probably need to be pre-paid, and appointments scheduled for the actual installation.

I've been doing some research on window tinting, and found some helpful info here. druheezy and Sev recommended Mr. Tint in Redwood City. They use Solar Gard films, which are top-notch (I had them on my old car for 4 years with no problems). The price they quoted me was a bit high -- $550 for 7 windows -- so I'm wondering if Sev and druheezy got the premium ("Quantum" dye-free) tint or the less expensive dye-based stuff?

JulianH recommended Auto Sound and Security on Blossom Hill Road, and I am waiting for them to call me back with details.

From talking with some tint guys, Solar Gard, Madico (SP?), and Llumar seem to be the best window tint brands. Llumar has the best reputation but is apparently the most expensive . Solar Gard has a transferable lifetime warranty; dunno about the rest.

My tint guy in San Diego recommended I call the local Lexus / BMW / Mercedes dealers and ask for recommendations. I will follow up on these and also get some input from Santa Cruz Subaru.

So, who's interested? I'd like to get this going ASAP, perhaps even this week, since I'm going to be out of town next week.

Also those of you who already have tint -- please post with the kind of tint you got, installer, and price.

thanks!

7 windows? how about just 6. I would like the rear three tinted dark, but the front three (yes, including the front one) tinted very little (basically a 97%/3% split if I remember the %s correctly).

I might be interested... but it all depends on how soon. If its mid to late April, I might be able to pull it off. I have heard quotes from "reputable" (at least from what co-workers have stated) tinters that did their 5 windows for around $150, so your $550 might be just a tad off.

edit: Can you make sure it isn't metallic film that they use?

Philip

Tinting wasn't on my priority list, but if the price is right, I'm interested.

California tint in Campbell is suppose to be pretty good as well. Lots of the local S4 owners have had their cars done there.

Just got off the phone with Bob at California Tint in Campbell. He's willing to offer i-Club members a $100 discount, bringing the total for all windows (except windshield) to $325. Still quite steep, so I'm going to swing by there this afternoon to see if the work is worth the price.

Just keeping you folks updated on the progress...

Got some interesting tint info from Bob as well.

In his opinion:

- Llumar is not optically clear
- Solar Gard has a high metal content, therefore it blocks AM radio reception for cars with a rear window antenna (not a concern for us!)

He uses Madico and Sun Gard brands which have a lower metal content.

My interpretation is this -- if you have a Valentine One radar detector, you may want to stay away from Solar Gard as it will block rear-facing radar more than brands with less metal. For everybody else, I would personally prefer the higher metal content as it will reflect more IR and UV rays. Also cell phones may not work as well inside the car.

FWIW, Smythe Mercedes recommended California Tinting as well.

I'm following up on a guy recommended by Santa Cruz Subaru. I like those independent tint guys that run their own businesses -- find the right one, and you can get good value.

Will keep you posted.

Ken is the owner. He does a really clean job. It has a small shop in San Mateo, but Ken treats you well. Tell him Hein sent you. I had him tinted my MY00 RS 2.5. Give him a call if you have questions. He uses Madico films. I have an appointment with him on Monday April 1, 2001 to get my WRX tint.

K, if your really wanting to cheak "everywhere".... one of my co-worker had her car done just a month or two ago at Rocky Mountain Tint in Fremont.

I think she stated it was aroun $150 to do all 5 windows (not the windshield) on her Jetta.

Hello All,

I've had Ray York do my windows on my RS. I also have an appointment with him on the 14th to do the WRX. I rolled the tint into my loan and budgeted $250 for 5 windows, plus a banner on the front. He does nice work with good materials. He also does the work at your house if you like. Overall I would definately recommend him. You should probably go through Sandy to inquire about a GB. I know for a fact he has no shortage of work as he has scheduled me about 3 weeks out from when I got a hold of him, so I can't say for sure that he will go for it. You won't know until you ask him though. But his prices do seem higher than the others quoted.

Tap Plastics in many convenient bay area locations stocks the 'Tint' paper you need. (No more than $20) Just put a VERY VERY mild soapy mix in a spray bottle and use it to set the tint on the windows. I thought it was a real pain in the arse, I tinted my 2 side windows in 30 min. NO BUBBLES!! I did have a little trouble with the back window though, might wanna have that part done. Buy a few feet a try yourself! You only have a few dollars and curse words to loose?!?!?!

But having it done professionally saves some curse words, ensures a quality product, for a nominal fee!

OK,

I'll be traveling until next Friday and won't have a chance to follow up much on this until then. If anybody wants to take the leads in this thread and run with them, please go ahead. In particular I want to see what Ray York can offer us; hopefully it will be more competitive than the other shops. Unfortunately, he has not returned my call as of today.

Personally, I'm interested in only the highest quality tint brands. Solar Gard would be preferable -- by the way, only the Valentine One would be affected because all other radar detectors have only (or mostly) front facing radar.

I have no clue what material I got; however, I can tell you this-- I've got more than one compliment about my tint. Furthermore, I have not seen even one bubble or peeling on any of my windows.

For those who don't know, I got my back three windows tinted by Mr. Tint, Redwood City, for $130.00.

Hope this helps,

Sounds interesting. I'd want low metal since I use a radar detector. Don't have my WRX yet. Might be interested in doing my OBS however.

Thanks for doing all the research on this.

Has anyone checked out Detailwerks in Campbell? I called up three manufacturers (Stoneguard, Xpel, and Invinca) for that clear bra stuff and they're the only place locally that does it. They also do window tinting and I was hoping to maybe get a package deal. However, my WRX isn't supposed to come in until May from Santa Cruz Subaru so I'm not too sure if I'll be too late for you guys' group buy.

Just got my new WRX tinted all around except for the windshield. It is pretty clean. Madico "CoolChrome" CK-50 50%VLT-42% Heat Rejection. It comes with a lifetime auto film warranty + cert. number. I dropped the car off in the morning and got it back by the end of the day. Ken(owner) is willing to give I-Club a discount. Call him for a group rate and discount.
