Default K&N didn't fit

I just purchased the K&N panel filter and it wouldn't fit. It has an extra rubber flange like apparatus that I trimmed with a utility knife and it now fits. I tried doing a couple of searches to see if anyone else had this problem, but to no avail. I know I read somewhere about other doing this and that to make it fit. What did you guys do to make it fit?

Well, mine fit fine. Not to be funny or anything, but did you try inserting it facing the other way?

Default K&N that didn't fit

Yes, humbly, I tried it different ways, but to no avail. It shouldn't matter anyway. I even tried stretching the plastic airbox gently, again to no avail. I took a watered down rag and wiped the oil off the rubber seal, to no avail. Trust me, I didn't want to go cutting on a $47 air filter, but that's what I had to do to make mine fit. It kept squeezing out of the airbox b/c it was too tight and the oiled seal was making it slippery. Now it fits without a problem.

Just a side note, it did fit down into the airbox easily, but it didn't seal correctly. I cut the part of the rubber that goes down inside the airbox, not the rubber that mats to the airbox lid. Make sure you check that out, don't want any air unfiltered do we ?

Weird, I had no problem with the installation of my filter.

I pulled my whole air box out to install mine, maybe you had a fitment problem due to that? That, or you got the wrong filter - maybe the wrong one in the right box?

Default K&N modified

I have the right part number and I also matted the old filter and K&N together to make sure the rubber seal was the same size. I also unhooked the airflow sensor and totally removed the whole airbox. The airbox looked like it had kind of warped in. Don't get extreme on me, it wasn't but maybe an 1/8", but it was causing the oily rubber seal to slip up out the air box. It's all good now, just a little frustrating at the time. I don't think it was K&N's fault, my airbox had just changed a little bit from heat or something maybe.

Hi, I'm resurfacing this thread because I had the same experience this weekend when cleaning and reinstalling my K&N for the first time. It didn't seem to go back in the way it was before, which (I thought) was with the filter "protruding" back toward the passenger compartment. Is this the correct orientation? I swear that is how it was when I took it out, but I could be wrong. It almost seemed to fit better when I turned it around. Which is the right way?

BTW, the posts here suggest that the outer rubber flange is supposed to be sandwiched between the outer edges of the airbox, such that you can see the flange from the outside. Is this correct too?

Oh, by the way, the reason I suspected I did something wrong is because my car now makes a deep "resonant" sound on hard acceleration, like I have a modified exhaust.

Sounds like to me you heard some extra air getting by the filter, which equals bad.

Try cleaning all the oil off the filter's rubber seal. Mine kept squeezing out and wiping the oil off the seal and filter housing helped keep it in the plastic air box.

As far as installing it wrong, I don't think you can. The filter needs to face down and it won't seat without being in the right position.

You need to check that the bottom of the airbox is together where the four tabs mate the halves. It's really easy to not get them engaged and that makes a big opening which makes the "Wonk" sound at wide open throttle. I've found that it's easiest to just take the whole airbox assembly out of the car. That way you can be sure it's assembled right.

I just installed a new Accel Blue filter in my '00 OBS and it fit perfecly.

BTW, JEGS carries the Accel filters and their price is great. I paid $44.98 shipped for mine. I think they have one for the '99 and earlier MAF intake cars too.
Here's a couple of photos that show the four tabs.

Thanks for the tips! It should have been obvious to me, but I didn't know about the four tabs and it really looked and felt like the box was fitting back together correctly from above. I had to undo the bolt from that metal support on the right side, which allowed me to take the back half of the airbox off completely. That made it much easier to reseat the tabs and close it up. Thanks again.
