Question What to do about my cel?

My cats are throwing a cel. Seeming as though my car was smogged about 5 months ago is it just time to gut the cats until I have to re-smog my car? What is the best way to gut a cat? Is there a way to make the cel turn off?

Well I just would rather gut the pipe instead of buy something. And I know it wont make the cel go away, but is there a cel fix I could use for after I gut the pipe?

The Pep eliminator is designed to be run on cars with no cat. So if you gut it and us the PEP eliminator you should be good to go. Those running track pipes have reported good luck with that combo.

Before cutting up an O2 you might try the Flat 4 extender. It is the same price, seems to work well, and can be installed in about two minutes.

Here's my thread on the subject from RS25.com

You should get the code read, it might not be a Cat failure code. Then go to this thread:http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=298963 and figure out what it is and what needs to be done to fix it.

Well I know its a cat failure code and when I checked it out I found that my cats need replacing, but instead of replacing them yet I thought I would gut them and have some fun before I had to spend money.

Ursine, you never listen to anything anyone says. What code is your car giving you? P0420? That could just as easily be a bad rear O2 sensor. Or half a dozen other problems. If your car passed smog, the cats are probably good (unless you did something to them in the last five months).

Post your code. If you know what it is and know what you think you're going to do, why ursine worthless post?

Well I took my car into my friends shop and they pulled the code, on the code reader machine it said it was either an exhaust leak or a bad cat, I checked but no leaks were found so henceforth, it must be a bad cat. And I dont want to buy a new cat so I figured I would just gut mine for the time being.

And why do you say I never listen, you are the one not reading my post. I asked how to gut my cats and how to fix the cel, not how to fix the code that is being thrown, I already have that part covered.

You're operating under the assumption that your cats are bad. You're not reading JewPac's post. If you want to gut your cats, go ahead and try. Have fun. When you fail and you're screwed, don't come back and whine about it.

OR, you could figure out what code is being sent by the ECU and run down the checks to figure out the problem. If you did nothing to them in the 5 months since your cats passed the smog test, they most probably did not end themselves since. You still haven't posted the code. And unless you removed the exhaust and replaced all the gaskets, it is possible you missed an exhaust leak.

I'll bet my 2 cents that it's a cat inefficiency code.

Alright everyone, I pulled the code and it was P0420 (I think, I just remember it had 420 in it). What should I do or what does it mean?

Check out the mechanical CEL fix that was discussed a while ago. It's a $5 part from pep-boys and some drilling.

Search, n00b. P0420 is the most common OBD code in N/A. If you can't read the above responses, and you won't search...

I did help you. Ten years from now, you'll look back and be amazed at how much I helped you out. If you did search and didn't find the information you needed,

I find plenty of info on how I need to use a CEL fix on the rear o2 sensor to make the light not come on but most threads say that I should try the mechanical fix before I use the thing I need to solder in. Do have a link to directions on making the mechanical CEL fix or can you tell me how to do it? I have the MIL eliminator thing but I want to try anythign else I can before I start hacking up my o2 sensor.

Sorry for getting pissed, I just get frustrated when people tell me to "search n00b" when I have and havent found the answer.
