Question squeal noise

k, i have a suburu imprezza 2.5rs (2003) with about 20,000 miles. my problem is, i hear a nasty whining kind of noise and dont know what it is and this is how it happens-> clutch in, shift to first, let clutch out and car starts moving and i start applying gas, clutch is fully out and whining noise is heard, get to around 2.5-3k rpm and shift into second and noise is gone. so what the heck was that noise?

Does it only happen on the 1-2 shift? Does it happen every time, or just when cold? Can you tell approximately where the noise is coming from?

A couple guesses from me would be:
pilot bearing
input bearing
loose belt
low p.s. fluid

it only happens in first gear. after i shift to second, its gone. also, the noise also comes when i'm going straight (aka, my driveway) so can it possibly be my power steering fluid? my first assumption was that it was coming from my wheels but what the heck do i know and it appears to be coming from the front? i'm not really sure, thats what it shounds like.
