Fortunately, I was never in a situation where I had to try it out. However, it should work just like normal.

I've done a number of swaps of steering wheels, most recently, I put my 04 F-XT's wheel in my son's 2001 Outback. The wiring harness did not match up but luckily the airbag itself was the same size so I only swapped the steering wheel and used the old airbag. Myself, I won't cut and splice wires. I'm not willing to risk an airbag not deploying in an accident just to have a nicer looking steering wheel. Personal choice is all. The only way to find out if it will actually work or not is after the fact. I have a feeling if there is a fatality and the airbag doesn't go off and they find out it was modified there could be legal ramifications. Just conjecture on my part.

My previous links stopped working when they did a server swap, here are new ones:

I followed this thread to swap my cruise control switch and it worked awsome, I didn't feel comfortable cutting the wires on the airbag, so I just swapped out the charge. I think that was the easier way to do it! Thanks for the write up. Does anyone know why the 2004 Sti cruise switch has the 2 more wires???

Captain, I just did it as well, swapped charges also. The extra wires in the 04 cruise is the on off switch I do believe. I may be wrong, if so someone will chime in. I just did seats, doorpanels, console, everything but the cluster and rear seat because I have a wagon.

Just finished my wheel swap (along with many other upgrades). I should have done this YEARS ago. Its hard to believe how much a couple less centimeters difference in diameter completely changes the feel of the steering wheel. Thanks to JPM Coachworks for the awesome alcantara wrap job too.

I was fortunate that someone had already changed the wiring in the wheel to allow the 04+ CC stalk to work with the WRX clock spring, but this thread was very helpful for the swap.

Just wanted to thank the op for a great step by step. Worked like a charm for my 05 wheel into my bugeye.

No problem, I'm glad people are still finding it useful.
