Post Factory Alarm -- Vibration Sensor Settings

My cousin has an aftermarket alarm on his Accord. He found the control for the vibration sensor and turned it way up. Now, if you walk up and bump the car, the sensor is triggered.

I have the factory alarm on my Subie, and I was trying to set it off one time--just to see what it takes. I was sitting there rocking the car back and forth and it would not go off.

Is our vibration sensor adjustable? If so, where is the control?

Thanks,
Jeff

It's attached to the steering column, look under the dash (drivers side), it's a black box with a red LED on it that lights up when it senses an impact. The adjustment screw is white.

I found that the shock sensors usually come with the settings turned most of the way down from the dealers after some stupid SUV put a 6 inch door ding and I wondered why my alarm didn't go off.

Just be careful when adjusting it and watch where you pound. Subaru sheet metal is very cheap when I thought the b pillars would be a safe place to tap to test the sensor. I was wrong. Now I have the 6 inch door ding and a 3 inch dent on the b pillar.

Some people don't know this, but the Subaru factory alarms have a dual stage sensor. One for a warning chirp and a full alarm.

To test it, the best place to hit (with a closed fist, hit with the opposite side of your thumb) is about 8" up and about 8" towards the center of the car from the front left corner of the windshield (yes, on the windshield).

Personally, my alarm came turned WAY sensitive and it drove me nuts - a Mercedes with a small hole in the muffler drove past it after I brought it home and made the alarm go off.

If you adjust it so that with a good hard hit on the windshield (not hard enough to break it, just enough to where you start to think you're about to hit it too hard) if it goes off with a good hit, back it down til it doesn't go off with that same hit. It is still fairly sensitive, but it works pretty well unless you're around musclecars all the time.

Cool, thx for all the info. When I get my car back, I'll have to play with this.

My alarm has been set off by nearby trains & lawnmowers, but like I said, I could rock it back and forth and not a sound.

My cousin probably set his to be too sensative (IMHO)--You can bump his bumper with your leg and it warns you; bump his door and WAH-WAH-WAH.

Thanks again,
Jeff
