Unhappy Tranny Problem???

I need a little help here. I have just over 1900 miles on my XT and today , for the first time, I was having a lot of trouble putting the car in 2nd and 4th gear after starting from a stop. No problems with 1st, 3rd, or 5th. It doesn't happen every time, but about 50% of the time. I wanted to hear from people on this board before I take it in. BTW, I never saw this on my WRX.

Thanks,

Peter

Could you describe the trouble a little more? Exactly what is happening?

It's hard to describe. Normally, I just shift from 1st to 2nd without a problem. Now, there is a lot of resistance going from 1st to 2nd but it does engage. I will then go into 3rd with no problem and get resistance again going from 3rd to 4th. If I go back into neutral and try 4th again it is a little notchy but it goes in ok. This sequence happens only about 50% of the time. It also seems to happen after the hill holding feature kicks in.

Question
do you have a set of shifterbushings in there? if so you might have gotten the washer on the outside backwards. its a common mistake.

Is this shifting done at a standstill?

What I mean is from a start on even a slight incline after the hill hold has engaged, I start driving away in first and then shift to second. That's when it happens. the shift from second to third is smooth and then there is trouble going from third to fourth. If i go back to neutral and into fourth again there is no problem.

2nd and 4th are on the same shaft, IIRC. Sounds like something has gone wonky in your transmission, sorry to say. Take it in... Sounds like it should be easy to replicate.

[edit] I'm guessing munched synchros, given that you've indicated double-clutching makes the problem go away. [/edit]

Yeah, it's going in Wed morning. After paying close attention I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the HH. I'll let you guys know what the results are.
