Even in Non-turbo cars there is blow by, where gases from the combustion chamber are re-routed to the intake manifold to be re-burnt. Over time, the oil creates a sludge. In turbos, the sludge builds up on the intercooler on non-turbos it builds up in the intake manifold.

I haven't come up for my next oil change yet, but I'll be sure and post pics when I inspect the catch cans, maybe as an addendum to my construction thread over on scoobymods.

OT: This last weekend I installed my new STi hoodscoop! I'll get some pics and a description up ASAP.

If this is useful and works as described (yes, I've seen the oil and "bits" in pictures in the cans at varioius sites on the net) why is it not installed by manufacturers? That it is not makes me skeptical....

Bob,

From Peaty and SubaruCO I'm gathering there is no detrimental effect (except less oil on the throttle body plate and intercooler).

I'm wondering as well why the manufacturer does not install them from the factory.

Considering they left out a little thing like a glove box light I can see why...

Yes, but thanks to folks like Peaty we know how to correct these little oversights.

I also think unless you tend to drive aggressive frequently it may not be all that necessary. It won't hurt though.

Well, a lot of cars DO come with glove box lights I'm under the impression that few cars come with the catch cans. Am I wrong? Anyone know of any cars that come with these factory installed on any cars?

Mostly only race cars have them from what I gather. My guess is it would add another thing for a "normal" person to have to watch and maintain. Car manufactures have enough trouble getting people to do somehting as simple as check the tire pressure let alone watch a catch can for fluids. I installed one to keep oil out of my IC Y pipe and it seemed to work for me.

Following Peaty's directions, but using a different catch can:
