Post Advice on Stromung midpipe vs muffler shop midpipe...

My Stromung 2.25" midpipe is maybe going to be delayed by as much as a couple of weeks.

The problem I have is that I am seeing minimal power gains with just the Stromung muffler section alone. I have no problem getting a refund for the Stromung midpipe and doing a mipipe locally today.

I realize that suspension mods are more important for Auto-x, but I was all set mentally for going to the auto-x this weekend with the job completed.

What would you do if you were disappointed with the performance gains with muffler only and were chomping at the bit for the power gains you were expecting?

Vote:

1. Stromung midpipe and wait.

2. Local shop and have speed now.

I have a chance to have a local muffler shop build my midpipe this afternoon for about the same cost, and don't know what to do. Does anyone expect that there would be a signigficant difference between the Stromung midpipe and the one made the local muffler shop (they come highly recomended)? There shouldn't be much in the way of bends...

Larry

I guess the biggest questions would be:

1. Is the new pipe properly bent?

2. What is the material it is made of?

If the answer to these questions is mandrel and stainless, why wait? Even if it is not stainless but at least a nice thick gauge of steel I would still probably go for it!

As long as it's the same material, a muffler shop shouldnt charge nearly as much as that Stromung mid pipe costs. I dont know how much you're paying, but I remember that mid pipe being expensive. And seeing as one of the best exhaust shops in my area will do a whole cat-back(plus the cost of the muffler of your choice) for less than $100. You should be able to get that mid pipe made for about $50-75

Thumbs up

Yeah, man. A mid-pipe isn't brain surgery. Let the local place do it. The only difference you might feel would be in your wallet.

Local place is going to do it for $65 if I let themuse the factory front flange from my factory midpipe - i.e. cut it off the stock pipe. and weld to the new.

Pipe won't be mandrel bent, but will look like the bends on the factory pipe = smooth.

I said okay for that price. Whoever buys the car later can keep the new pipe...

Larry,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I doubt you will get huge hp gains from just adding the new mid-pipe. You will probably just get another 3-5 hp (guessing here).

I have the A'pexi N1 cat-back and it does offer a little more power, but the car isn't blazing fast now. It did help my 0-60 times a bit, but I did it for the sound mostly, and I love it

I wouldn' think there would be much difference in the mid-pipe from stromung vs. independent shop. So good luck, and let us know how much performance gain you get from the bigger pipe.

Well, I live at 6,000 feet above sea-level, so ANY extra power is a blessing. We lose about 3% power per 1,000 feet above sea-level = 18% total loss of power.

I felt about a 3-4hp increase (butt-g-meter) with Stromung only, and would love another 3-4hp with the larger midpipe.

My custom cold air intake with AMSOIL foam filter made a MUCH bigger improvement vs Stromung. I would guess I have an extra 15hp or more with ALL the mods I've done so far. Very happy, but want more...

I have done a writeup of both mods at my website, and just did new intake today and writeup tonight. Visit www.ImprezaRS.com/mymods.htm to see the pix and story.

Thanks,

Larry

Question

Larry-

where are you acquiring the Stromung Muffler from? How much did they ask for the midpipe & muffler?

Thanks!

Yeah, I seem to remember that midpipe being REALLY simple and having only minimal bends to it. I don't think it'd even be worth the time and money spent to mandrel bend the piping unless the shop has the equipment to do it and just uses it regularly instead of just for special stuff.

BTW, $65 for 3-5 HP is a better deal then an Undrive Pulley, $180 for 5-7 or so.

I got it from Eric Gagnon at R&E performance on a group buy, http://www.reperformance.8m.com/ for $325. The midpipe was $110, but is backordered till next week or so. Shipping was $25 and $15 respectively.

I will buy from him again when I need something else.

I am going in a 12noon tomorrow for my new midpipe, and will post an update about it on my website at www.imprezars.com/mymods.htm
