Post Running Lean? What type of Gauges?

Ok now I've already seached through all the past topics, so I looked first!

Now I know if you have one of those elbow air filters and the whole exhaust system you'll be running lean, right? (This according to SCC) But what if you have one of the drop-in filters and an exhaust? Will this lean condition still happen? I'm asking 'cause I have the K&N drop-in and will be getting a new exhaust soon so I was thinking about getting the S-AFC to prevent this lean condition, but If I don't have to get it thats great!

Now one more question on gauges. I'll be staying N/A powered for a while, and I was wondering what gauges would be best to get...asumeing I have to get S-AFC. I did some research, and came up with the A/F meter, and Oil temp gauge. But there's also the EGT gauge, but I wasn't sure what this showed? And do you really need any of these to properly tune the S-AFC? Thanks for any help. OH yea, I have a '99 RS.

Actually if you had continued to read the Impreza project in SCC you would learn that they went back to running with the stock intake with a K&N drop in filter. Their lean run condition seemed to only happen high in the rpm band around 5500 or so when they were using the aftermarket intake setup. However to be sure get an S-AFC and take a few hard runs to see what it reads and then adjust it as needed. hope this helps

When the air box under the hood scoop is removed the air flow isn't smooth anymore. The plenum keeps the flow smooth without it air flow will be eratic and you will experience lean condition when the air flow has "skinny" induction. The EGT is very important. I don't know why everyone has this gauge on their car. Heat is a big enemy of any engine and EGT will tell you how hot your really running. I think it's a must have.

Pucakveli is right. Unless u take out the 2nd air box, u shouldn't be running lean. The lean as was mentioned caused by the fact that the box was taken out and air became more wild thus causing turbulence along hte piping and made the MAF to read bad. Also the turbulence can potentially destroy the fragile MAF sensor. If I were you, I'd go get teh ISR intake which makes use of the 2nd air box but still uses a K&N cone. Also you won't lose low end grunt as well. The air box also serves as a reservoir of air so that when you gas the car from a stand still the air within the 2nd air box will be sucked in instead from the first filter box. There was a good discussion about this issue if you do a search on "Why we need a 2nd air box". I think that's all from me.

If this is the case, then how about the ARC intake system? It has a 'chamber' with an air filter attached to it. I believe weapon R makes this as well. Just curious.
