just got back from the dealership, where the tech told us (just after changing the oil and filter) that all foresters take 4.5 qt of oil. when i said i read something about a misprint and that it should be 5 qt, he said, "nope, theyre all 4.5"
then i went online and found this popular peice (thanks scoobymods.com): Dear xxxx: Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We do apologize for this inconvenience. We appreciate that you brought this to our attention. The correct capacity for the engine oil for the 2004 Forester XT is 5 quarts when replacing the engine oil and filter. The 4.2 quart capacity noted in your owner's manual is for the 2004 Forester non-turbo models when just filling up the engine oil and not replacing the filter. The capacity of the non-turbo models when replacing the filter is 4.8 quarts. We have advised our Publications Department that this information needs to be added to future Forester owner's manuals. Thanks for the opportunity to be of assistance. If you need any future assistance, please feel free to contact us. Happy Holidays to you and your family! Best wishes, John J. Mergen Subaru of America, Inc. this is probably why when we check the oil level on the dipstick, it is always below the E mark. we previously told the service advisor that we had read somewhere 5 qt and he told us he would tell the tech, but then when we asked the tech today, he said 4.5qt. which is correct, 4.5 or 5 qt? is the .5 qt going to make a difference?

I've always found the dip stick on Scoobies to be screwy
I've been using 5 qts the last few changes and it seems fine to me. I don't think it's enough to worry about though. |

5 quarts on the XT like the email says
That email was sent to me , but I know that others have received the same verification from SOA. I'm not sure why this has not been disseminated to their techs, but it doesn't surprise me. |
